Viewers say no to another term for immigration and Defense Minister
The United Democratic Party is holding a convention this weekend, it’s one of the most talked about because City Councilor Roger Espejo is going up against the incumbent Carlos Perdomo for Caribbean Shores. It’s considered a test of against the establishment by a young upstart. Perdomo has a number of ghosts haunting him, so we asked our viewers on Thursday night if the Minister of Immigration and Defense deserves a second term in that constituency over a new comer. Seventy-nine percent of voters on our e-poll voted no and the other twenty-one percent thinks he should be given another chance. While many pointed to Perdomo’s faults, one viewer thinks it should be left to the constituents. They commented that “Members of the UDP in that constituency will determine who they want as standard bearer. The opinions of anyone, other than actual UDPs in Caribbean Shores, are irrelevant.”
It is obvious that the minister is incompetent, you can tell a lot from a person when they speak in public and the minister does not inspire confidence. It’s time to start demanding more from our elected officials.
I am a Belizean that lives in US, I have a house in Caribbean shores. I voted for Mr. Perdomo because of his character. All we have heard about Mr Perdomo is alleged. Maybe the responsibilities are over his head… For the first time in over 20 years my street was paved! that was huge for me after living there for almost 20 years …Now this guy Espejo, who is he? I know nothing about him, I know politics especially in Belize is a way of means ……easy way to get rich!
“Irrelevant”?? This is so not. The position that the Minister held was not a Caribbean Shores issue it was a national concern. Therefore, we definitely have a voice in this! So I want Caribbean Shores constituents to hear the nations concern. The minister is not competent for the job and he has proven so. Like any other job you have to be very qualified for this otherwise you can fired or don’t get hired.
This just makes me think of Political reform. Sometimes I wish that we can elect our PM and not only a constituents gets to decide.
@Indy, I posted the original comment that the “opinions of the anyone, other than actual UDPs in Caribbean Shores, is irrelevant”. I am referring to this convention. It’s a party convention for party members in a specific constituency. Unless you are a UDP member in Caribbean Shores, you don’t get a say in this matter. This is not a general election, this is not referendum on the Minister’s performance.
My point was that by polling the public at large (when they are not allowed to vote in the convention) can skew the process. Yes, Perdomo is very unpopular nationally… but this convention is not about choosing a cabinet minister. It’s for the UDPs in Caribbean Shores to choose their standard bearer. That’s all.
