Ex-servicemen League affected by zoning at tourism village

It’s not only the hair braiders, taxi drivers or tour guides, who are vexed by the zoning. The problem has come at the front door of the Ex-Servicemen’s League.  At a meeting with the BTB on Wednesday night, the league’s president, said that three veterans are buried at the Memorial Park and the annual Remembrance Day celebration will be disrupted with the new development plans.

Bernard Adolphus, President, Belize Ex-Servicemen’s League

“Our interest at the Ex-servicemen’s League is concentrated on the Memorial Park because a number of people are not aware one, that there are three veterans who were buried there and that whole area is a monument for us. And when we look at the concept, I notice that there was no facilitation for the remembrance day parade, there was no entrance how we’re gonna get in there and how our visitors and our veterans and family members from the past would be facilitate in the area. So those were my concerns and I put that up and as a result of that and other matters which came up I think BTB promised that they’re going back to the drawing board.

We would prefer if—internationally you don’t build inside a memorial; you don’t build inside. On the outside of the perimeters of the memorial you can put up your tourism hut, whatever, develop the streets because we are not against development but we don’t want the inside to be disturbed.  They didn’t give us a time but I think in the interest and in the fact that in March they want to put this thing out so they have to get back early as possible because we wouldn’t want to see them start the implementation and there is no thought given to veterans and the past veterans and the fact that we celebrate a remembrance every November and that is important for veterans, military men, uniform services and internationally.”

Bernard Adolphus also noted that they are working to restore the monument that was split in half in Hurricane Richard.

Obviously Mary Fuller is not a Veteran, nor does she respect what the men & women of our Armed Forces, and those of our allies sacrificed and still sacrifice for our freedom. I wouldn’t be surprised if she objects to the annual Poppy Appeal, and never wears a Poppy every year either!

The Memorial Park was designated as a memorial, and also the site for the annual Remembrence Parade many years ago, and so it should remain.

I agree that the park should be improved, but the graves of the veterans resting there and the Memorial should remain. In fact, they should be renovated at public expense.

The visiting tourists, mostly from the US would not, object to the Memorial remaining in place, (after all it is the MEMORIAL PARK) as they respect their forces and veterans.

No doubt BTB wil have its way and dig up the graves and relocate the Memorial, and if they do, I hope the ghosts of our fallen Veterans haunt them for the rest of their lives!
