Minister of Sports versus Dr. Chimilio’s FIFA

Bertie Chimilio is the FIFA strongman in Belize. He has survived many attempts to displace him as head of the Football Federation of Belize. This coming weekend, no less than the Minister of Sports will try to run Chimilio out of town and have him and his executive replaced. The Minister has been holding meetings around the country with numerous football organizations. But removing the incumbent is easier said than done because the crafty Chimilio who has a rather lengthy tenure at the FFB also has a strong footing in FIFA, who pays the bills for the FFB and calls the tune. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The organizational landscape of Belize’s football arena is once again under the threat of major housecleaning that is if Minister of Sports John Saldivar gets his way with the ouster of current FFB president Dr. Bertie Chimilio in an upcoming election.  Preparations are currently underway among football aficionados for this coming Saturday when a vote is planned to remove Chimilio and the existing administration of the Football Federation of Belize. It is not the first time, but Chimilio has prevailed in all previous attempts. Since the beginning of the month, Saldiver has been meeting with various football stakeholders to ouster Chimilio.  Among the many criticisms is the way the executive body of the Football Federation is being ran.  There have also been complaints of lack of confidence in FFB under Chimilio’s leadership.  At the end of the consultations Saldivar guaranteed that he would correspond with FFB and FIFA, demanding that FFB adheres to its bylaws.

Those statutes dictate that the chain of command begins with the FFB Congress which is comprised of seven members from the district associations and the Belize Premier Football League.  The congress then elects the administration; however, in an unprecedented move the FFB Secretariat recently issued an email to its members endorsing Chimilio and his slate of candidates.  They include Dr. Bertie Chimilio for President, Bernaldino Pech for Senior Vice President, David Jones for Vice President, as well as John Moody and attorney Michael Peyrefitte as Executive Members. Peyrefitte, is a new comer to the roster and that is raising eyebrows.

Dr. Chimilio has apparently precluded the nominated slate of Sergio Chuc for President, Wilhelm Moguel for Senior Vice President, Mervin Flores for Second Vice President as well as Daniel Arzu and Cruz Gamez as Executive Member.  Chimilio, we understand, has also called into question the legitimacy of Chuc’s candidacy. And so the election is set for Saturday at eleven a.m. Will Chimilio survive this one? Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

We could not get the reaction from the Ministry of Sports on this story because of the government imposed censorship of this station.

It will be a blessed day for BELIZE when we can read about an organization that runs smoothly and is working for the benefit of what they are representing and the people running them are not filling their pockets. Looks so far like “Belizean For Justice” is one of the few sincere organization.

  13. maurice says:

Why are we all consumed by the financial gain, nobody is talking about football and what we can do to improve football at our level in Belize. We should concentrate more on the development of football at grass roots level and contrlo our own destiny instead of worrying about how fat the pockets of FFB is getting. Lets all do our part in the development of our youth. The level of football has decrease drastically with the influx of money. The players before our generation were name brand players without a salary and football was a past time and was fun to watch. Stop complaining. Without our youths and football the won’t be any FFB.

  14. Nolbert Moss says:

I agree with maurice. When the players of Belize commit themselves to organize themselves the way we used to do when we were young and playing with doll heads, only then can the FFB be brought into alignment with what is needed for Belize to show its true footballing potential on the international stage. In the meantime, instead of blowing steam at the FFB Executive and its crony-ism, we can use that very effort to organize youth football. With such effort, we can realize a crop of committed players within ten years to form functional clubs to constitute functional district associations which in turn should result in a functional Football federation of Belize and its subordinate Executive Committee. Lets work as we shoot the breeze, Belizeans..
