Canon Leroy Flowers speaks about media relations with government

On this morning’s Open Your Eyes, our guest was Canon Leroy Flowers from the Anglican Mission, who spoke about the true meaning of Christmas. One of the things he discussed is that the season is celebrated by most religions, regardless of differing views. He compared the ban by the Barrow administration—which is based on claims that this station is a PUP organ—to conflicts over differing religious beliefs. According to Flowers, focusing on our differences doesn’t get us anywhere.

“Christianity is based upon Jesus Christ as Lord. And I don’t have any problem in you having a different version and that’s why I have this difficulty with the government saying that they are to block this Channel 5. Because in this world that we live, this God that we worship, tells us ask him anything. He is bigger than you and I. So if you want to be a Baptist, so long as you believe in Jesus Christ as lord and savior, I’m your brother.  We can spend all our time quarreling about the things that divide us and we get nowhere. So we use energy in the wrong direction while somebody out there is really in need.”

The ban was imposed on Channel Five last week Tuesday when the government announced that its ministers or representatives from the ministries and government agencies would not be allowed to speak directly to Channel Five.

  2. cg says:

interesting, he forgot to mention the Bible doesnt ask us to celebrate Jesus’ birthday or provide an exact date for that matter and Jesus NEVER got involved in politics….he was neutral…

  3. Sarah says:

I agree 100%…well said…Canon….focusing on our differences only divides us….Channel 5 news and production is the best in Belize….compared to the other news station…..I am a UDP…but i watch Channel 5 news for its quality and professionalism.. I am disappointed that the gov’t felt the need to do a ban…yet the organ of our party “wave” continues to be a DISGRACE

  4. Earl Grey says:

He would be more HELPFUL SPEAKING OUT AGAINST CRIME IN SOCIETY!!!!

    THE CHURCHES HAVE FAILED US……………

  5. Sarah says:

Dont blame the church for our crimes….their doors are open….but no-one has time to go….Sunday schools across the country are dwindling because parents no longer find it important to include GOD in their children’s lives……People need to take on responsibility for their own actions….besides the topic was not crime it was the meaning of christmas! he used the example to show why we shdnt let differences divide us…..its interesting when things go array…ppl want to know where is the church…??????the church is and has always been……THERE!!!!!!

Earl, he’s working his way up to it. Does anyone remember when the Anglican Church, St John’s to be specific offered a viable youth program out of which we got the Mission Singers who did Mass in Blues. The church was overflowing every Sunday morning because young people actually enjoyed being there. Square dance may not work in this day & age but it was something the boys & girls could do together without genital contact & none of us left with black eyes, knife or bullet wounds. Canon, this is a step in the right direction, keep going.

  7. Love says:

the true meaning of christmas because someone decided to make it a word that spells CHRISTMAS and have some some meaning behind it., does not exist. The majority of the world
celebrate it becusse it sounds beautiful with lot of eating and drinking, colorful lights etc. But Jesus
was never born on 25th of December. Nevertheless, if Christmas is accepted then as Jesus birtday, then we should be showing love to one another because that is what Jesus was, “LOVE”
Instead, days before this date some will be killed and even on that day someone will be robbed, will be crying and so on. Christmas means a day to have money in your pocket .

  8. BELIZEANGYPSY says:

Earl Grey maybe you have never been to a service to hear Father Flowers preach , he is an advocate for street crime and for all the madness happening in our Country. He is not afraid to preach about all the crimes occuring —- matter of fact he can tell you about an incident where he officiate over a funeral and was very disrespected by a gang group , he was not afraid to chastise them and speak out about it.

  9. Earl Grey says:

BELIZEANGYPSY………. I HOPE THAT HE IS NOT TRULY AND ADVOCATE FOR STREET CRIME as you SAID.

Well…………. HE NEEDS TO DO MORE…………. TO GO OUT INTO THE STREET as JESUS DID and to PREACH THE WORD……and WHILE HE IS AT IT……… HE CAN GET OTHER DENOMINATIONS INVOLVED.

  10. BELIZEANGYPSY says:

I stand corrected, typo error—– Father Flowers is an advocate AGAINST street crimes and not for it , thanks for the correction.
