Search for a new Chief Justice continues
As we reported early this week, Justice Manuel Sosa has been sworn in as the first Belizean president to the Court of Appeal. In the meantime, the search for a new Chief Justice continues. Three candidates are in the running with one from the Caribbean being favored by insiders, whilst another candidate from New Zealand comes with very impressive credentials. According to the PM, all three should be in Belize shortly for interviews.
In the meantime, Justice Samuel Awich is holding on as acting Chief Justice. Reports from the Supreme Court indicate that the learned judge is under the gun himself. We can report that he is being asked to withdraw from hearing at least two cases. He is expected to rule on January twenty-fourth on whether he will withdraw or not. This is a unusual situation and we will be following the results closely.
Belize court system is looking more and morw like a Kangaroo court. When will the executive refrain from singlehandedly choosing the chief justice. Let the house do this not a small group. It will look better. Now it looks like the PM is trying to stack the cards in his favor.
