Dangerous bees sting 3 unlucky persons
A swarm of deadly Africanized bees descended on a family at Mahogany Heights off the Western Highway. It was a harrowing experience for three persons who were stung, while three others hid inside their new house to avoid what are also known as the killer bees. It took some time to get rid of them but the incident paralyzed the community. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

A family was relocating from Belize City to Mahogany Heights today, but when they got to their new house, they found that the building was already occupied… by killer bees. The father, who was attacked by the swarm, was reluctant to appear on camera, because he didn’t want to distress his relatives.

“We just came up here to Mahogany Heights because we just got a little house and stuff. Now with the movements and whatever we di move the stuff inside the house—we neva know dat we had bees at the spot because it’s some time dat we noh come up here. Apparently with the movements like I said, it arose the bees them. You know with the dogs, they bark and stuff like that, well they attack one of the dogs. Right away I burst the chain and she got away. But the next little one I didn’t have time to get her because the time when they crowd her is the same time they crowd me. 00:02:11 and then not only me, they crowded my next two sons and a next helper who was helping us; even the truck man. So right now he is trapped in his truck. He can’t go nowhere. What was worrying me is that I have my two daughters and my next younger baby son inside my house too trapped right now. What worries me a lot is that my daughter is pregnant and it could throw her in labor.”
The father and his two sons were stung several times but a BERT ambulance arrived in the area soon after to treat them.

“All over, I can’t count; all in my eyes. If you notice my eyes and thing, all inside my eyes, my head top and everything. Like I said, I don’t want to excite my mom because she is a wonderful person, but the good Lord will help us get out of this situation.”

“And your sons that were outside with you, they got stung as well?”
Voice of: Mahogany Heights Resident
“Yes, two of them. They got stung real bad; real, real bad. So thank God my daughters—well they are inside. They’re covering up with sheets right now and stuff like that so I tell them please don’t open that door for nothing. Mr. Bert here they checked my blood, my pulse and everything because as I got stung, I ran through the street and I had dropped, I fainted. I managed to reach the shop and then they give me some pills like Tylenol or something and I guess that’s what probably helped me a lot because I was shivering like a leaf.”
Pest control personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture in Belmopan were called out to free the three persons who trapped inside the house and to do away with the killer bees. But the residents in the area were appalled at difficult it was to get assistance lives were on the line.

“We were trying our best to get some assistance from one of the policemen and it was no kind of response. And then we get in touch with the Pest Control and they were saying they went private so you gotta pay them for whatever. I mean come on, this is life and death. If these gentlemen were here, BERT and them—thank God that they came. If you can’t run fast enough those things are gonna kill you. They’re small but they crowd you in swarms so. When you hear somebody dead or whatever off that, dah because it’s bad and it’s not easy death because I saw my little dog dead in less than a minute.”
Delahnie Bain for News Five.
In the past two years, two persons have been killed by the bees. One such case occurred in January 2010 and the other in October 2009.
