Storeowner kills machete wielding burglar
A burglary early on Sunday morning at Three Flags Supermarket at mile fifty nine on the Western Highway, ended in the death of the suspect. Paul Benjamin was a football player and his family is still in shock. They don’t believe he ever entered the building and allege that the scene was staged. While the cops deny that allegation, they did reveal that one of their own is being dealt with internally for not responding to the initial report of a burglary in progress at the establishment. News Five’s Marion Ali reports.
Juanita Saravia, Mother of Deceased
“The only thing I woulda want the police them to find out the truth.”
The family of twenty four year old Paul Benjamin, a father and football player on the Unitedville Village Football Team, questions the circumstances of his shooting death and alleges that the scene where they found him was not where he was shot.
Juanita Saravia
“My younger son had to identify him and my son said there was not a drip of blood, not a pool of blood, nothing.”
Marion Ali
“So what do you feel happened then? You feel he wasn’t killed there?”
Juanita Saravia
“No! I feel like my son wasn’t killed there. He didn’t have a shirt on, he had his football socks across his stomach, he had his football shirt (jersey) spread out beside him and his bag that he take his football boots and you know, between his foot.”
Aside from the strong belief of Benjamin’s mother, Juanita Saravia, that the scene of the incident was staged, one resident who lives near the supermarket told News Five off-camera that she did hear what sounded like two sets of gunshots that were several minutes apart.
Voice of: Unitedville Resident
“I was watching TV and then I turned off the TV and after I turned off the TV about a few minutes after I said I was going to sleep. When I listened, I heard about five shots. Actually I wasn’t sure if it was gunshot at the time because they normally bust dynamite and after wah while yoh noh hear nothing again. But twenty minutes after you hear mussi like wah next four gunshot again.”
Marion Ali
“Did you hear anything of a breaking in? Did you hear…”
Voice of: Unitedville Resident
“No! No alarm, noise, nothing. Nothing just the gunshot.”
But Officer Commanding the San Ignacio Police Station, Senior Superintendent Chester Williams, who visited the scene denies that anything was staged.
Sr. Supt. Chester Williams, Officer Commanding, Cayo Police Formation
“I can almost categorically state that the person was shot where he was found. [Umm] there were blood in the area, particularly where his head was because the fatal wound was the one to the head I would suggest. If the brother or the family would want to, I can have the police take them to the location again today or tomorrow to show them the exact location because we want to be transparent. I do not want to have anybody having the perception that the police is in any way, shape or form trying to cover up for Mister Willoughby. Under the head there was a lot of blood.”
“That was inside the store?”
Sr. Supt. Chester Williams
“Not inside the store, that was behind the store where Mister Willoughby states that he was confronted by this individual which eventually caused him to fire several shots. Yes I can also state that we observed on the body a total of six bullet holes.”
The man who allegedly shot and killed Benjamin is Ulrick Willoughby, the proprietor of the business. He was initially detained but later released pending advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecutions on whether he used justifiable force upon Benjamin. That will be determined following the post mortem examination on Tuesday. Williams says that police found items stolen from the store in the general vicinity.
“Some items were found in the immediate vicinity which were stolen from the store. Yes the store was burglarized, yes items were stolen and the items that were found were mostly liquor and we have also gathered information that there may have been another person involved. But so as…”
Marion Ali
“So two, not three?”
Sr. Supt. Chester Williams
“We were told about two. So as not to prejudice the investigation, I will refrain from calling the name of the other person that we are looking for because whenever that person is apprehended, there may be the need to conduct an identification parade and to have his name out in the media prior to the identification parade may prejudice the parade when that time comes.”
“Is that person another football player like Mister Benjamin?”
Sr. Supt. Chester Williams
“I will venture to say no more as it pertains to that other person.”
And while Willoughby’s fate is yet undetermined, the Police Department has taken strict measures against one of its own for the way he handled the incident from the start.
Sr. Supt. Chester Williams
“Misses Willoughby, the wife of Mister Willoughby had called the San Ignacio town Police Station sometime after two, three o’clock thereabout reporting that there was a burglary in progress at their establishment, the mile fifty-nine Superstore. The corporal who was in charge of the night relief at that particular time, Corporal Toledano, for some reason or the other failed to respond to the call. It was not until about forty-five minutes thereabout, after the first call was received that the shooting actually took place. So in hindsight, we are saying that had the police responded in time, who knows, maybe the incident could have been prevented.”
The officer faces two disciplinary charges: failing to respond to a report from the public, a charge to which he pleaded not guilty, and for neglecting his duties when he failed to record that first report of burglary in the police diary. But while that matter is under investigation internally, those close to the deceased are still trying to figure out what happened before he was killed. Chairman of Unitedville, Mike Juan said he was with Benjamin in San Ignacio where their team was playing a game the day before he was killed. He said Benjamin appeared troubled.
Mike Juan, Chairman, Unitedville
“He didn’t play, he was just with me—he reached late to the game. So he said we sit down and watched the game and have couple ice there with him and speaking. Last thing I told him, I said Paul we start workout maybe next week because we need you—we want key players on the team. So I hired a vehicle to take the team to, because I didn’t have a vehicle at the time. SO the vehicle was prepared to come back, ready to come back. So I tell the team we are ready to come back, and nobody wanted to come back to Unitedville. So they said they would stay and ketch back the bus. He was not too happy—like he was there with me but his mind was—maybe he mi feel something mi wah happen.”
Marion Ali
“Did he tell you anything?”
Mike Juan
“No he didn’t say anything. He only said that on this week he will start to work out.”
Paul Benjamin was the third of eight children for Juanita Saravia and the father of a toddler. Marion Ali for News Five.
Senior Superintendent Williams says the police have not received the report that that there were two sets of gunshots minutes apart and he invites residents of the area to come forward with information.
Never take a machete to a gunfight. Mr. Willoughby had every right t protect his property, when business owners make a killing, it is not from murdering their customers. If only one neighbor heard two sets of shots, she may be mistaken & if he had to shoot the man twice, the thief should have stopped moving after he lost the initial battle. Chester, I believe you.
There is a double sad story here; I don’t want to be premature in my judgment, but it seems this young man might have been having financial problems thus tempting him to committing a crime (burglary, probably setup with some of his friends) and just a law abiding citizen protecting his property. Indeed, maybe if the police have responded earlier this guy would have just been in jail right now and not in the morgue.
However, I will not condemn this citizen for protecting himself or property…crime don’t pay, its that simple.
There is going to be a whooooooole lot more of this, this year, people are getting extremely desperate and crime will spiral out of control, I don’t want to think it, but realistically that 134 for 2010 will pale; i think people will start killing for food, not money, but food to feed themselves and families.
We need a damn Revolution in this country!!! Barrow has got to go.
This is so sad I knew Paul back I’m high-school days not to be a troublesome person hoping they find out what really took place may justice be served may your soul rest in peace Paul your in a better place now gone but not forgotten.
Half way through the month and the death toll is rising.
I have no doubt that Paul Benjamin was a threat to the shop owner, and that the shop owner acted in accordance with a machete wielding psycho. Just like the regular citizens of Belize, enough is enough.
No matter how many days the police manage to stay out of the news, the incompetent current keeps pulling them back to the surface. This police officer should be fired, not discipline and posted in another town. He failed to do his job, he failed the police department and he failed the people, again. Not entirely sure of what this retarded cop would have accomplished even if he showed up at a crime progress.
This situation could have been prevented, or ended with a possible conviction.
he played football during the day and rob stores at hight ,he was good son…
wake up!!!
your son was a criminal ,life for life .
I know Mr. Willoughby to be a respectible man, and I applaud him for taking a stand. Criminals in Belize rarelly get justis when the system gets them, and I hope the surviving burglars were scared enough to change their way of life.
I’d say the police lacks professionalism and should be relief from work not suspended, we need officers who wants to work for the country and to help curb crime, this is not the first time this happens at the police station in San Ignacio where they take forever to come after a crime report unless it’s a drunk man then they hurry come to kick him like a dog.
beentheman and BZNinCALI u’re some immature persons! those of you who doesn’t know this child should not judge him. He was not a troublesome person! Do not judge others caz u have children as well! Typical Belizeans always making judgment from what they hear….
Unless you’ve lived that young man’s life DO NOT JUDGE HIM!
May his soul rest in peace….
tnx!
I don’t believe they kill this young man where they find him I think that that owner should be dealt with even if he was robbing the place come on shoot him in the foot not to kill him. this man is an animal also being he was in the army of course he is use to killing people thats why he won’t think twice but kill you like an animal. He should be charge for shoot the young man so much time. Chester william he is an @$$ hole too cause he will take up for this man nothing will come out of this that man have money he will pay off the police to take side for him. Especially to say thats the spot where they kill him which is a lie. MAybe the young man was just drinking there around the area. And they talking that alcohol was missing please.. That a lie wake up Belize stop listen to these @$$ hole who claim they telling the truth. Yes the owner had right but not to kill someone. and yes they never have right to go thieft if thats what they were doing. May your soul R>I>P Hey your not forgotten just last week this young man was talking to me. He was a nice person going to school about 4 years ago.
last night the once quiet neighborhood of Belama sounded like a warzone. just a mere 100 yards away from the Police Station that this Barrow government chose to close down to spite this division a Chinese grocer was robbed at gunpoint. Cops responded and the entire neighborhood was terrorized and geopardized for an hour with numerous shots fired at the robber . How can they Restore Belize if everything they do is poltical, if this Police Station had remained open this incident most definitely would have been avoided!!!!!!!!!!!
Xaan, we cannot ask armed, law abiding citizens to lay down & let the criminals walk and run over them. So the man had military training, a good enough reason to find a softer target or better yet, not steal. We have to stop making excuses if we are to pull ourselves up out of this bloody sewer. We are ashamed of the wrong things in Belize, work is not a dirty word, it is okay to get our hands dirty, take a job that is beneath us until we can do better. Offer to scrub somebody’s floor, he had a machete, go cut some crass, stand on the corner selling your own greasy fried chicken, but if you break into someone’s home or business expect them to drop you.
WOW!!! what a coincidence, 6 gun shots. wouldn’t one to the hand and one to the leg do the job, these people are out of hand. They have a Gun and they feel powerful. what if it was your son that got shot by someone else Mr. Ulrick Willoughby. You have to learn to apply an eye for an eye rule on these things. He thief from you, then you thief from him back. don’t go and shoot him SIX times, that’s hate. I HOPE THEY CHARGE YOU FOR MURDER!!!!!
Xaan and Hearts seem like you are both condoned this likes of that machete wielding psycho, at least you are entitled to your own opinions.
Weather the machete wielding psycho had money problems or not he had no right to robbed a shop, he should have worked a 9 to 5 job in the day time, and play football in the weekend. Everyone has money problems in Belize, but not everyone is robbing shops.
I agree with Hearts… Something is terribly wrong here…Not even a soldier in raw war is shot so much time. It is too obvious that something is missing in this story. RIP Paul and may some justice be served here.
I totally agree with Hearts.. Chester Williams is a total A@@ hole! The entire police force doesn’t even know how to conduct a good investigation caz they lack knowledge and good judgment! Lord have mercy on Belize!
Yet they wonder why so many people are taking vengeance.. The system apparently is incapable of providing justice to the people so they take justice for them selves….
I agree to the above person the !@#$%^& chine had no right to kill this young man. He cud have shot him on his leg,arm or shoulder but not to kill him. dem Chinese come to Belize to better themselves n this is how they act.. wat right he had to kill him. i think the damn chine man shud be charged for killing this young man.this is b s …
BZNinCALI… how can u attest to the fact that he had a machete?? Do not believe everything you hear… Apparently you’ve not reading the news properly. How would a rusty machete appear shiny in the dark??
Use proper judgment and sense before you quickly rejoice over this young man’s death.. Have some conscience..
and MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST– He was working his “7-5″… Get your stats correct…
…boss we tired of all this violence….killing a man is not justifiable but everyone has a right to protect his property…..If I was threatened I would have probably done the same thing as the shop owner. I did not know the young man who got killed but nothing justifies the fact that he went there to commit a crime. Many citizens are scared…..We will have our hands full this year….
If an intruder enters your property when you’re home, you have the right to protect your property with reasonable force

Even though the Police Department may or may not have its bias we as a people must stand for righteousness.
We must “wake up and smell the coffee” there are a lot of things that do happen here and there and some individuals like dream stuff up or pretend that things are not the way they are…
We should ask ourselves logically questions…
what was this young man doing in that vicinity @ that time of the morning?
Mr. Ulrick had right to his property and to protect that which is his… his life and livelihood–his business.
i don’t say that i uphold Mr. ulrick entirely, based on the number of shots but, think of this… the guy might have been running…since according to some individuals, that Paul’s body was not found where the blood was or that they don’t believe that where he was lying down was the proper place he was when he shot… i mean the guy could’ve been running or trying to attack mr. Ulrick for all we know and that why the owner was trying to defend himself and to try to take down this burglar…. and for the “others” that might or have been involved … Mr. Ulrick might have tried to shoot at them too… that maybe what the Neighbor heard… something i know about the Belizean people… they rarely could tell the right thing..them always get confused over them own words…. much less the time… when accidents or even incidents occur people are not thinking about time either.. they are normally motivated to get quick facts such as “da who, da what? what you hear? and there they get blank afta that.
My people lets not be fooled when people say…” oh he/she was a nice, good person…. ” lets admit in truth who the people really were…if the guy was drinking how in the world that person will be a good person? and drinking behind or someone else property early in the morning? Come on people of United Ville wake up!
Mr. Ulrick all the best to you on this case and i know you and your wife are honorable people that informed the Police department… and negligence on the officer caused more harm to this case. you did what you could do best at the time.
Condolences to the family of the deceased, yes we pity his death, such a loss… but you must hold on to truth as , Mrs. Saravia said she “wants to know the truth”, and let this matter not hold you back but boost you to make the better out of the remaining family members you have…. make this be an example to your two boys and girls to find the truth.
please let God do His part and let the Police Department handle this case… let the witnesses or anyone with valuable information come forth and shed more light on this issue….
RIP Paul
This is the reality of our country, corruption and violence! I didn’t want to comment but I just want to say that these people commenting about each other are just wasting there time. It is just another person dead and another dead by tomorrow. If you want to make a change in Belize, you guys need to start with yourselves and your family. The whole system as whole needs to be change. The people of Belize is just full of ignorance. The police, the business people, every body as whole needs to know what they are putting themselves into if they play with fire. Many of our people have a greed for money and making the corruption in this country, I am talking about every kind of people, starting with the police, ministers, business people, politicians and the list goes on. This is what is affecting our country and the constitution/law itself needs to be change. If you think this not the truth, ask yourself why there is so many unsolved murders, burglaries and other crimes; this is so because not only the gangs are involved in crimes but many other people you least expect. I love my country but this may get worse when the new generation arise!
@Xaan, let’s agree to disagree, this is my final response. We have to separate sense from nonsense. There was a saying in Belize that a thief can be a murderer but a murderer is not necessarily a thief. A rusty machete is the same shape as a new one in the dark & that sharp edge shows the raw metal. As a Belizean, we all know what they look like & how much damage they can cause. Had he injured or killed Mr. Willoughby we would be screaming about the out of control criminals killing productive citizens. If the man had a job, he obviously was not stealing to eat. Our parents made do with a lot less than most of us have today, “noh put yoh hat higher than yoh cuh reach”. We need to walk our widening backsides to the store, buy some rice, beans, flour, salt, baking powder & shortening & get our lazy @$$#$ in front of the stove, fire hearth or whatever we can afford to cook on, get off the cell phone we cannot afford & stop making excuses & contributing to our own demise.
I grew up dirt poor in Belize City, got up, ate Johnny cake, fry jacks or tortillas & washed it down with that watered down milk or sugar & water & never missed a day of school. All of us who have had children who followed their worthless friends & wound up in trouble, who stood by them but made them face the consequences have seen those children go on to lead productive lives.
I was Paul’s teacher. I know his family and I sympathize with them. I am not certain what happened. I cannot picture Paul stealing, because that’s not the type of person I knew him to be, but if he did, then only God can judge him. Mr. Willoughby (who is not a Chinese) had every right to protect his property, but not to overkill the way he did. We cannot combat crime with violence. Yes we have had enough, but what if…only what if he was innocent? But perhaps Mr. Willoughby did so because the police never answered his call. Only God knows what happened and only he can judge, but let’s not fall into this Belizeans. Let’s not rejoice over tragedies like this, rather let’s learn from them. And please don’t call Paul a psycho because he was not! Rest in peace, Paul.
Contradict, if my son was out robbing someone and he got shot 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or more times, then I know i probably failed as a parent and WILL NOT make excuse for a criminal, there is NO reason to commit a crime, as Derealist says and I reiterate, everyone in Belize have money problems, but not everyone is out robbing or killing people.
Also, take this into consideration, take the mental climate of Belizeans, robbers are now shooting store owners for no reason, robbers are murdering people who are simply buying fuel (wrong place wrong time), so do you think someone who is a law abiding citizen, who is jumpy as hell because of they fact they know that their type (store owners) are great targets for criminals – do you think he would stand there and not fair for his life and property; sweety if i catch my own kid breaking into my business and he is wielding a machete he is going down, sorry, my life is more important to me than any other, but i will not try to take someone’s life if they do not try to take mine. I wonder how you would react if i came flying at you with a machete (you ever seen what a machete can do to a human body?).
Stop condoning criminals, finding excuses for criminals, this is the very reason our conviction rate is pathetic; the criminals know that they can kill witnesses and intimidate the judiciary system.
In Mexico, there are border towns that the literally have no police system, the mayor of the city lives a looooooow profile, the drug cartel literally killed most of them out and no one wants to be a cop or be in local politics, 50% of the population moved away, if the cartels see you talking to the Military (they usually come in a clean up the aftermath), they will send their hitmen to come in and blow you and your family away with high powered guns….Belize City will be there soon.
I’ve known Paul for about 3 yesrs now and he was very nice, humble and very mannerly. He was a son every mother ever wanted. If what the police reported is true, something went very wrong cause this was not like him. He was a very hard worker who provided for his family.
I will not swear for him but something went terribly wrong.
We love you Paul and you will be missed terribly. You will always be in our hearts and minds.
We love you. RIP Paul.
Man, when someting hapens everybody starts judging all kind of ways. But, know that many of us Belizeans has two faces. We mite not be happy for the killing of this man but nobody will be happy
if someone come into your prop to steal. God keep us in your Mercies!
The only person responsible for this is the irresponsible police officer who should, could have responded to the urgent call from the owners.
Mr Singh you need to fire this officer, he is a drunkard, he is drunk day and night, once he use to live in Santa Familia Village so we know him very well, also he is a woman abuser, he is always beating his wife, hmmm, FIRE HIS @$$.
Mr Willoughby had all right to protect his live and property, the young man was trespassing with the intention to thief, or maybe he had already burglarize the store.
If Paul Benjamin was such a decent young man what was he doing at 3am in the morning in the man property, I don’t feel sorry for him, he should have think twice before following bad company, he should have think twice about his child.
this is very sad for both the whole story is sad
Snucums, I think you need to read the story, where did you get the idea that Willoughby is a Chinese? The Chinese are being blamed for enough in Belize I don’t think that they need any more unnecessary blames.
@snucums, how many Chinese you know named Willoughby??
As for whether the shop keeper was justified, while I would never condone shooting a thief who was fleeing a crime scene, the criminals in Belize have set the precedent that they are more than willing to commit murder in the act of even the most petty thefts. Regardless of whether the thief had a machette or something more lethal, if you are confronted by a thief today you must assume that your life is in mortal danger.
For those who say the shop keeper “should have shot him in the foot”, if you fire a weapon in self defense you aim for the biggest target, the torso. It’s much harder to shoot someone in the arm or leg and if you miss you may give your assailant a chance to capture your weapon and use it against you.
“The people had enough” You cannot blame his parents for what he have done. That is absolutely nonsense! Parents can raise a child the right way but when they become independent to make decisions on their own, they take whatever path they choose. So please, quit talking trash and blaming his parents…
and thank you “concerned” Paul was not a psycho. He was a respectable young man but made the mistake to associate with the wrong crowd that time.
Let’s quit judging this young man and leave all that up to our creator.
we love you Paul and the entire village of United Ville will miss you as well…
This is one of the reason I like to read the blogs, all different views and opinions. We see how people think, lots of division on the issues, and all think that they are right .Life is happening and all I can say is as Jesus said, ” let not your heart be trouble”because we have not seen anything it! We really do not know people, we know what they want us to know, the heart is wicked and deceitful, who can know it? only God….
Well said BT. Don’t blame the parents. Youths of our days are so much influenced by what they see in the TELEVISION. The one eye DEVIL. Sometimes both parents work and it is the TV that grows our kids. TV is mother, father, grandmothre and teacher. What a big influence TV has over us. Defend your property!!!! I am with you property owners, don’t be afraid. When you shoot, shoot to the biggest part of the body, yes. Am really sorry for the parents who tried very hard to grow their kids to be law abiding citizens, but it is them that are free to choose which road to take. Salvation is free, but DA IF YOU WANT, Big Up Femito fro Creek. Condolences to the family and it is a frightening experience for Mr Willoughby. Blessings!!!
Before people get too hasty they should take a little tour around the world, http://www.mediadump.com/hosted-id73-worlds-ten-most-dangerous-cities.html?utm_source=wahoha.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=wahoha; too many Belizeans have been brainwashed into thinking that violence only exist in Belize; I mean seriously, the way we are looked upon is as if though crime does not percolate anywhere else. Don’t get me wrong, i am not condoning crime on any level, all crime is despicable and destructive to all countries/societies/communities; however we must remember that the reason crime is so out of control today is because our country, our people, our minds have been infested with a virus called materialism worshiping and glorification of wealth/riches/money, remember as kids most of us use to look at the big time drug dealers and wish we were like them, but now we are seeing a society that lost its soul to globalization and materialism, consumerism, you have the folks who will do anything to live large and you will have the folks who can’t manage or stand to live within their means turn to crime to feed that demon and when that demon can’t be feed people get depressed and turn to drugs….go to any community in Belize and you will see the few driving around in the fancy cars and living in the big houses and you ask anyone on the streets about that person and you will hear some interesting stories. Buju said it best,” Destruction of the poor, it is poverty; destruction of the the soul, it is vanity.”
Here is the reality of the fact in Belize: We are fighting over the pixels and most can’t see the big picture. Draw back far enough and start connecting the dots, our country is in crisis for a reason and if and ONLY IF Belizeans bond and stand together and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, will we take our country back from the street thugs and the thugs that wear the Armani suites and RayBan sunglasses.
ONLY WE CAN FIX OUR PROBLEM; THERE IS NO KNIGHT IN SHINNING ARMOUR!!!!!!
Xaan are you retarded or something; I did not blame his parents; I said if my kid turned out like that then i would blame myself as a parent; however, I do not know this young man from Adams or his parents; moreover, if you are an intelligent person you will realize that majority of the problems of your youths and young people in this country stems from bad parenting (this has been researched and well documented). There is nothing 100% of anything, so burn that in your brain when you want to make a rebuttal. This young man made a stupid decision and paid the ultimate price. Period. You will not get any pity from me for a stinking criminal, i know a man for over 30 years that lived homeless in my community, he hustled every single day of his life and lived within his means, a fellow Belizean gave him a watchman job and he did that until the day of his death. He did not care about anything material, just food in his belly, cloths on his back and his watchman job gave him a roof over his head….and he never, ever committed one single crime or tried to live for material things, and you know something he was the happiest person i ever seen in my life, he took his little drink, didn’t mess with anyone, respected everyone and vise versa, he didn’t have any education but you could not cheat him out of one cent….so quit making excuses and being apologetic for criminals, you are part of the problem when you do that.
THOSE OF YOU TALKING CRAP ABOUT IF HE WAS SHOT ONCE OR TWICE THAT WAS ENOUGH have zero idea as to what you are talking about…
First of all real life is not like the movies, in the movies you shoot and the bullet goes exactly where you want it and the bad guy drops..
In real life a 9mm round does not have much stopping power, call it a product of gun control but if this citizen was allowed by law to own a .45 all he needed was to shoot him three two or three times and the guy would have stopped.
Killing power is a whole different thing, for example the .22 round doesnt have much stopping power but it does have a very big potential when it comes to killing power because it tumbles as it enters the body VS it punching a neat hole through and through like the 9mm.
JUSTIFIED SHOOTING, GIVE THE MAN AN AWARD and to the family…. well isnt it always the case when a thief is shot by a citizen or the police? they always turn out to be church going choir singing old lady helping good boys.
hi to one and all the child is dead willoughby kill him bottom line. he should be lock up.and no matter what he was doing man don;t have right to kill. and who so ever feel like he did the right thing to protect his property that ok this world is a camma,. it will happen to you to the only sad thing in this it wont be you nephew or brother or sister it will you or your parents god is above man kind and money, land and any material thing. and none of those can make life but it can take life. we come with nothing and we will leave with nothing .and if you all feel like money have power wait until your turn.today for us tomorrow for you remember your words because you cannot take it back, what is said is said and what is done is done.i pray and ask god to help you all that feel its right to kill people.you will need it .one thing god do us, is we face life and death right here on earth.paul benjamin is where is won’t hurt no more and i pray that justice is serve.that all.
Mr. Willoughby needs to be charge. he didnt had to shot that young man like that. he could have shot him in his foot. he wanted to kill. he and his wife and her family pretend they are christian but they are hyprocrites. i hope the dpp charge him. he is a murderer. nobody deserve to die like that. but what goes around comes around. he will never prosper. that ugly thing.
I think people have the right to protect their property with any force necessary excessive or not. He had no business being on private property and should be shot just for that and that alone. The laws of Belize are in favor of the criminal and that needs to change. As a Belizean I have been robbed and stolen from numerous times. I bet every post on here has had something stolen in Belize. If it were not for stealing we would have no crime in this country. I have even told the police exactly who stole from me and they did nothing. Now the citizens are standing up taking the law into their own hands. When it is dark and you are fearing for your life and property you react differently. Mr. Willoughby was reacting to Mr. Benjamin’s actions. I think every citizen in Belize should be given a handgun and see how many thieves will steal then.
To all the apologetic saps…when a criminals break into your house and assualt/rape/kill one of your relative or yourself, you will be singing a very different tune. Shot in foot my @$$, a man come at me with a machete i will empty the clip, and remember there were more than one assailant, is Mr. Willoughby a psychic to know if either one of them didn’t have a gun, this guy was lucky he had some military training, if it was an ordinary citizen he would have probably fired a couple rounds and suppose the other criminal had a gun, he would have been shot; Mr. Willoughby used his training and it save his life. I see two men (never know if a couple more hiding to pounce on you) in my yard, you can bet your life that bullets will be flying from my licensed handgun and i will not go over and ask, “Hey good buddies, which one of you will not assault me and which one of you have a gun?”. As Islander said, aiming in a handgun takes a whole heap of practice and a handgun in general is very hard to aim and hit our target; go ahead, go to a gun range and see how bad you are shooting at a stationary target and see how good you are, this guy was moving and am sure rapidly, Mr. Willoughby could have easily, easily, easily been yet another law abiding citizen lying dead protecting his own property and if he didn’t have a gun, am sure he would have been dead, and then these same bleeding hearts for the criminal would have been singing the same tune, “oh he was a good boy and he helped this one and that one and he played football,” and the country, once again in as many days, would have been crying out in disgust about the out of control crime. CITIZENS ARM YOURSELVES, INVEST THE MONEY IT TAKES TO GET A LICENSE GUN IN THIS COUNTRY, LIVE IN REALITY, BECAUSE WHEN THE CRIMINALS COME AT YOU WITH A WEAPON….THEY WILL USE IT. This is the real world out here, dog eat dog, protect yourself or fall victim to these scum criminals. Damn people watch to much damn movies, thinking someone attacking you in real life will stand still so you can shoot at there legs.

WE NEED A FULL………………impartial………….. INVESTIGATION.
Nothing less……………
we belizean’s have no choice but to take the law in our own hands, because police are not there when you need them.
sorry for paul’s family.
Paul’s mom raised him better.
For all you who Want mr. willoughby locked up, turn the story around, had paul had the gun and willoughby the machete , who would be dead? If six masked man are robbing your store and you are alone , and one of them comes after you with a machete you would shoot also.
Mr willoughby’s store had been robbed several times more during the same week, i think 3 times and what was stolen? Mostly gigarretes. Who was selling cigarretes in unitedville for half price??
Pauls younger brother was. Pauls younger brother claims the body was moved, well how would he know? Oh well guess his brother most have been there when paul got shot, how else would he know. Oh and where were the Police? Mrs willoughby called the police around 2 am and she called a second time, but no police showed, guess where they were? Oh they were busy drinking at happy’s night club and using the only vehicle cayo police station has.
If you know someone in unitevile thats not related to paul, ask them what happen.
Paul is not a known thief , but he made the mistake once to go steal. Paul picked the crowd he wanted to hang with and they convinced him to steal with them. Paul’s brother has paul’s blood on his hands, because he convinced paul to go steal with him. Paul’s friends knew who had been stealing previous nights at mr.willoughby’s store and they tried telling mr.willoughby these thief’s are from camalote. Imagine that mr.willoughby has in mind these thief’s are bad guys from a different village, mr.willoughby was shocked when he pulled paul,s mask off and saw it was paul, Saturday afternoon paul was selling BBQ in front of mr.willoughby’s store, mr.willoughby and paul were friends. Paul betraded his friend for a few bottles of liquor.
Bottom Line , Give Mr Willoughby a Reward, He did the thing everyone would have done.
belizeans taking the law in their own hands
Everyone wants to blame someone in this event. Let’s think of cause and effect. The police are not at fault, Mr. Willoughby is not at fault. The person trespassing is the cause of all this and the case is now closed. The thief did his part, Mr. Willoughby did his part, and the police did their part. If he was never on Mr. Willoughby’s property none of this would have ever happened. At 3am did he expect Mr. Willoughby to come out and offer him a cup of coffee. I know better than to be on someone else property causing mischief at 3am and if others don’t understand they better learn real quick that is something you don’t do.
We should have more law abiding citizens like Mr Willoughby. He has a right to bears arms, he was protecting him and his family. I completely support Mr Willougby.
