Red carpet rolls out for 1st Annual Belize Music Awards

Local entertainers, promoters, and fans are getting ready for the first annual Belize Music Awards, which takes place at the Bliss this Saturday night. The event, coordinated by Flavas Entertainment, is geared at bringing together Belizean artists, both seasoned and newcomers, while recognizing those who have contributed to the growth of the industry. Over the past few weeks, votes have been cast via the internet and in local newspapers.  The categories include: Best Male, as well as Best Female Vocalists, Best Hip Hop Artist and New Upcoming Artist. The Logistics Coordinator for Flavas Entertainment, Orson Picart, says FLAVAS has seen improvement in the quality of music and performances by local artists and that is what they want to promote.

“This first annual Belize Music Awards was basically the brainchild of Flavas Entertainment along with some of our sponsors. We decided to put this show together to kind of bridge that generational divide between the younger artists and the younger artists and to have everybody in one building. Tomorrow night at the Bliss we have a full line up. We have artists who will be receiving awards in six categories as well as honorary awards. Now when you think about honorary, you think about will they be placed in some nominatable category or something like that? No. we have people like Chico Ramos, Titiman Flores, Leila Vernon and other older heads in the music industry who will be recognized for their contribution to the music industry in Belize.  The award show features a host of our sponsors; the artists first as well as performances from people like Nelo Player, we have TR who should be performing, we have Youth voices who will be doing a spoken piece and it’s going to be laden with performances and awards and a lot of prestigious people will be there to actually hand out these awards. The show is going to be at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts, Saturday the twenty-ninth. It’s going to start at seven o’clock. From seven to eight, we’re going to have a red carpet special; that’s strictly for the artists and the sponsors. So if people want to come out you could just come out. Bring your camera if yoh want tek wah picture with Mr. Program or Miss Melonie Gillett, whatever the case might be. That’s from seven to eight and the actual award show starts from eight up until eleven o’clock. Tickets can be bought over at the Record Shack, also Stone’s Music Outlet on George Street, you can pick up your tickets at the Bliss, you can pick up your tickets at Cellular World or you can just give me a call because I have twenty-five ah dehn fi sell. I see this “Award Show” as bogus because they are a lot of other artist outside of Belize City that are not being recognized here. All I see is a bunch of artist from Belize City and some unworthy acts. Cayo District has some great artist, Orange Walk, PG, etc…How can you pick the best if you dont know the best??

I’m curious to know what criteria is used to nominate artists.

Flavas Entertianment, I applaud you for the effort to recognise Belizean Artists and personally would like your initiative to be inclusive of artists from all over the country. Having a transparent and inclusive Belize Music Awards (BMA) will not only be good for the artists but also for your organization.
