Anglican educators head to U.S. to learn teaching tips

Story PictureTomorrow a group of Belizean teachers will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to take part in the Anglican Diocese Annual International Reading Association conference. The five-day event will have the participation of more than twenty thousand Anglican teachers from throughout North America and the Caribbean. The purpose of the meetings is to review new strategies on reading techniques. According to General Manager of Belize’s Anglican Schools, Carol Babb students are the greatest beneficiaries of the event.

Carol Babb, General Manager, Anglican Schools
“At this conference you learn about the best practices in literacy, in reading and writing, you learn about the latest books coming out, how we can make our children read better, you meet other professionals like yourself, other educators and we interact with them and we learn from each other.”

Beatrice Geban, Teacher, St. Mary’s Primary
“I plan to learn new reading theories and strategies, comprehension skills and what is suitable to teach within the confines of the classroom, what are the best methods that are suitable for teaching. Remember reading is the most fundamental skill that children need to integrate within all the disciplines. If a student does not know how to read it creates problems for that child. Reading is not just calling words, it’s the ability of understanding what is being read from the written text.”

Babb says the Belize delegation will also be making a presentation on their local teaching styles on reading at the general meeting.
