Senator Paul Perriot says he was disrespected by Telemedia

As we reported in Tuesday’s newscast Senator Paul Perriott of the Belize Communications Workers Union, has resigned from his post as senior technician at Telemedia. He calls it a forced resignation, which he tendered on February eighteenth because the company’s management was thwarting the union’s attempt to own twenty-three percent of Telemedia shares. Perriott’s advance notice which was waived to take effect forthwith succeeded a transfer to Dangriga in September 2010 which he considered to be an act of union busting since the company deliberately did not honor the terms of his relocation. Tonight the B.C.W.U. will meet with the National Trade Union Congress in a closed door session to seek its support on the matter. Perriott says he feels disrespected by the manner in which Telemedia has handled the situation.

“It is to me one of the most disrespectful parts of what I’m going through right now because I tell my colleagues that as a senator it is much, it is supposed to be a prestigious position and respected. I’m the same senator who is supposed to be representing workers is going through issues that maybe another worker who is not represented or who is not in a leadership position in a union is going through. And it just shows that there is no concern by the government and I keep on saying the government but it is by the management of B.T.L. who is controlled by the government, board appointed. There is no limit to how far they would go.”

“Finally, how far are you prepared to go with this particular fight?”

“Well [uhm] Isani I believe that we must start championing it through the membership of the B.C.W.U. and gain support at that level and I also believe that legally I am looking at my options. I am speaking with the lawyers as is to try to find what is the best direction for myself to take this in because I definitely know that it is union busting and Chapter 304 which deals with the trade unions and rights definitely protects me from this sort of treatment. So I am going to weigh my options legally and definitely through the trade union trying to get the members to rally behind the cause.”

When I was a high school student in Corozal and that was a long long time ago, I had a girl friend who told me that union is a wicked parasite that sucks the blood of unsuspecting members. She went on to say that workers would pay their dues thinking that union would look after them just to be back stabbed. She herself had witnessed when union leaders would take money from the employer to the detriment of the employee. She is the daughter of a man who at that time was the treasurer of the workers’ union of Pembrokal sugar factory. You who are too young to have known Pembrokal, the sugar factory was situated in what is now Libertad Village in Corozal. Believe me when I say that unions are not in the best interest of a Country muchless in the interest of the common worker. I venture to say that union is a wicked arm of the devil who uses it to destabilize a govt. and to keep the workers in chains. The problems is that we as individuals and as a society love money too much which is the root of all evil ( 1 Timothy 6:10). I have travelled as way South to the City of Balboa in Panama and as far North to the Canadian Border and have understood that a worker can take his employer to court without the aide of a union. As to Mr. Perriot, as far as I am concern, he got what he deserves and have not an ounce of sympathy for him.

Lucas, the name was Pembroke Hall. They were affiliated with the sugar industry in the north and Trout Hall was connected with citrus in the south. Both were British concerns that exploited Belize for its agricultural products and natural resources.
I think the point here is that Paul Perriott is the Senator representing workers, yet none of the unions have come forward to denounce what is a clear case of union busting. What happened to the solidarity – the “we shall not be moved” mantra?
Who said that the Unions never need to be busted.
Why is it always the business that are evil and in need of being busted?
