Teen, who attempted suicide, speaks against taking one’s own life

We told you about the unusual spike in suicides in the western town of Benque Viejo. Well, the last person who attempted to take her own life is eighteen year old Daisy Cerda, a fourth form student.  With her throat still in pain and showing the scars of the rope she used less than a week ago to hang herself, Daisy sat down with us to talk about the incident.  While we appreciate that her situation is a sensitive one, she agreed to the interview to attempt to discourage other youths who also find themselves in similar situations.

Daisy Cerda, Attempted Suicide

“I’m not sure why. I don’t have clear my thinking of why I did it. I’m not sure, but I just know that God gave me a next chance and that I am here. Thanks to my boyfriend, he found me and now I am here to talk to next youth.”

Marion Ali

“You said you don’t know what happened. Were you troubled by something?”

Daisy Cerda

“Well I was passing through many things. My cousin killed himself and that hurt me a lot and I had another problems and I think I put them all together and that made a big deal. Then I didn’t found how to come out of this problem and I thought this was the best thing to do, but I was wrong.”

Marion Ali

“Is there something that is happening that we can’t explain? Is there something that we are not seeing that is troubling you all?”

Daisy Cerda

“Well in my case I don’t think so. People say it’s about obeah and thing, blackjack and in my case its not because I haven’t played on that things and that bad things. But there are rumors that it may be a bad thing but I’m not sure. I can’t say if yes or no.”

Marion Ali

“For you it was individual problems?”

Daisy Cerda

“Individual problems.”

THE CHURCH NEEDS TO BECOME MORE INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY.

  2. Lucas says:

It was 7/15/75 at 2:45 p:m when I crossed the Mopan River from Guatemala into Belize just to be intercepted by a Benque police named Balam from Palmer of Orange Walk. At that time I held the rank of a Captain in the Guatemalan revolutionary armed forces. Balam may never know that his life was saved because I never gave the order to waste him. On the other side of the Mopan was my platoon. ( years later I met Balam in Costa Rica. He was training with police dogs. If he has a good memory, he may recall the incident)
AS I enjoyed la fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen I met people like Humberto Moh, Elmer tut, Magnaleno Yacab and Manuel LLanos. I am sure they have no idea of what I am talking. I hope that la Juventud benquena can find a way forward.

For YOUTHS with problems where are their goddamn parents…this is where we end up with youths/children having children and at the end…their children become more mature than themselves….its a shame on these households….

and for you LUCAS i hope you are not one of those RAPIST/G2 of Guatemala who at the end of your criminal activity in your country sought refuge in our jewel…..thank GOD we are not Guatemalans…i know your so called friends…and i hope you are not who i think you are….yet you live here and still pledged your allegiance to your country….old and fake…

One needs to take care of their spiritual needs in order to deal with the problems of this world. These poor babies are growing up with out any idea how to focus or be problem solvers. Any problem has a solution, but we all need to be trained on how to deal with them appropriately and without spiritual guidance i’m afraid it can be a lost cause.

Just a word fir for mr benqueno why dont you try writing something positive sometime instead of always bringing down your own people. be positive because all i have read are negative degrading comments!!!!! peace buddy

  6. Victor A. Cucul says:

I think that the entire community ought to come together and address this growing problem within our communities. Parents especially should become more visible in their children’s lives. And youths should join youth clubs and sporting activities. Policy makers and church leaders should start visiting neighborhoods and get young people involved in positive activities. To me, one of the lead causes of suicides is drug abuse such as “alcohol use”. I once attempted suicide when I was 21 years old, but I managed to overcome the pressure by talking to people about my problems. Just talking to someone about your problems can actually make a person think more optimistic about the whatever situation one is in. Let’s think life my people…let’s live!

Psalms 46:1- GOD IS FOR US A REFUGE AND STRENGTH, A HELP THAT IS READILY TO BE FOUND DURING DISTRESSES.

  8. cindy says:

I thought the girl was going to be punished for wanting to kill herself. Parents of kids are akids. they are the ones that tolerate stupidness of kids. when you pass by houses these kids are partying drinking and nothing is being done. we need to punish parents so they start doing their jobs

For Mr. Benqueno Most of the people in Belize arent originally belizeans. trace your roots.

  9. BZNinCALI says:

Everyone gets depressed, we do not have the right to marginalize what another person is feeling. Victor, thank you for reminding us that it is okay to talk to other people & while you & others may have had drug or alcohol related depression, many suicide attempts have nothing to do with substance abuse. The sense of isolation & worthlessness can affect anyone, even the sober & people we see as having everything.

  10. spanglish says:

IF GOD IS FOR US WHO CAN BE AGAINST US!!! HEY ALL INSTEAD OF PASSING COMMENTS THAT DOES HELP, LETS GET TOGETHER AND START FASTING AND PRAYING FOR OUR COMMUNITY, OUR YOUNG PEOPLE NEEDS US NOW MORE THAN EVER, CHURCH LEADERS NEED TO STAND AS ONE BODY IN CHRIST AND INTERCEDE FOR BENQUE VIEJO TOWN, WE KNOW THAT THE LAST DAYS ARE HERE, IT’S A FIGHT BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE RIGHTEOUS, JESUS CHRIST HAS ALREADY WON THAT FIGHT, LET US TURN TO HIM FOR HE IS THE SAVIOR OF BENQUE VIEJO TOWN PEOPLE.

  11. Sorry says:

I hope you can be one of those
who will help the youths of Benque

  12. Mark says:

We all have to remember with the downfall of faith and all that we hear happen in the religions the youths who have children no longer go to church and so their children don’t go either. So how do you help someone without faith?? We have also that the young parents might have been fisically abused by their parents/guardians and don’t want the same for their children so we tend to give them too much leeway. So I say leave the church one side for now, try to have meetings where the children can go and talk about their problems, and please don’t chismia to every!@#$%^&body what so and so tell you because you will lose the childs trust. furthermore I am living proof that this Emo !@#$ can be turned around. It still brings tears to my eyes when a young person ends his/her life.

  13. Mark says:

And for benqueno quit being a !@#$%^& @$$hole. love people everyone makes mistakes and i bet you are no !@#$%^& saint.

  14. Cayodawg says:

What a cute/pretty little girl, I am praying for you Honey I hope u gather all the strength you are seeking direct from God. If u need somewhere to go the best place to be is with good company go to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses believe me u will find what u don’t even know u r seeking.

  15. Dominique says:

Who’s to blame in cases like this? Some of you might say the parents, but it is not always so. There are many wonderful parents whose kids turn out to be rebels and many wonderful kids whose parents just don’t care. Let us not forget the importance of choosing our friends. Many times our peers will lead us into wrongdoing, even when we are ‘good’ boys or girls. Life can be complicated, but that doesn’t mean that hurting ourselves in any way will change what is happening around us. As some of you have wrote, in those times we need to be around people who will lift us up and give us a good advice. We need to get involved in positive things!
So what can we do for those people, who at some point in their troubled lives feel that taking their own lives is the only solution? We can start by praying! Prayer is a powerful tool.
For those of you who don’t believe in God, I respect it – but just take a look around you, and it’s not hard to notice that in most instances, only Families who pray together, stay together!
Whenever a family breaks up, their children’s life will NEVER be the same… ever…
So, let us make a good decision of who we will choose for partners, because in the end… children, youths, even adults without parents are the most affected!
It is never too late to re-think our lives and by so doing change our own destiny, for good. In the end we are responsible for the great gift God gave us!
May God Bless all of you!

  16. Annie says:

its so sad that these things ar happening in my home town….i was once in depression and thanks to God and my parents i am a different person….
parents need to gain trust from their kids…

  17. corf says:

@ Dominique, I agree 100%. Parents aren’t always to blame and to those that never went through a depression, God bless your perfect little souls.I’ve been depressed a few times before and I do not wish that on my worst enemy. Some people are not as strong as myself for not committing suicide but im not saying that i never thought about it. People don’t believe in God anymore therefore these situation arises. I wish the best for all people and not just the youths because people from all walks of life suffer from depression.
