Will you read? Campaign launched
The Belize National Library Service and Information System held a series of events to mark its seventy-fifth anniversary. All the activities were focused on promoting reading, especially among children and today a campaign called “Will You Read” was launched. The initiative started in Belize City and will move on to the districts as the library encourages adults to read to their children. Chief Librarian Joy Ysaguirre says they will also feature locally written books and stories.

“It is called a “Will You Read” campaign and it is going to go, hopefully around Belize. Perhaps every month we will do another district and the whole purpose of it is to simulate reading amongst our very young and within our primary schools.”

“And this will feature different readers at the different stops?”
Joy Ysaguirre
“Most definitely, we’re hoping to identify notable persons in each community to please read for the kids.”

“And you have your first reader here today at the launch.”
Joy Ysaguirre
“Yes, we have Mrs. Kim Simpliss Barrow and her daughter present here today and especially given its child stimulation month, we have targeted pre-school children to entertain today.”
“How long is this campaign expected to last?”
Joy Ysaguirre
“Perhaps not more than six or seven months and what we’re pushing are the books that came out of the story writing competition; the stories that came out of the story writing competition that we launched last month. So we’re pushing those stories which are basically Belizeans stories and written by Belizeans. And we want to show that there’s a common interest, that the children can identify with who are our writers and hopefully understand out of all of this that reading is something that is there for pleasure.”
Great way to go, congratulations, reading is important for our young children, for a fact: the sooner they start, the more they like it!!!!
