WIN-Belize taking a stand against political tabloid’s printing of woman’s photo

The publication in the government’s party newspaper, the Guardian, of a female executive from the People’s United Party, is drawing condemnation from many sectors. A mini protest was staged on Wednesday by the women of the People’s United Party and today the Women’s Issues Network (WIN) Belize issued a release, expressing its displeasure over the publication of the photograph of Gina Tillett, the President of P.U.P.’s United Women’s Group. The image made the front page of last week’s Guardian newspaper, with the caption “P.U.P. Role Model” and it has raised the ire of women, who find the image degrading and distasteful. The Executive Director of Win-Belize, Carolyn Reynolds, shares that sentiment and she says the network is taking a stand against the newspaper and its editor.

Carolyn Reynolds

“The network itself we are very upset with the picture that’s in the newspaper. It’s a very distasteful picture, discriminatory against women and so we have no tolerance against something like that.”

Delahnie Bain

“And you all are taking…”

Carolyn Reynolds

“Yes, we are taking a stand; we’re boycotting purchase of the news paper until there is an apology from the editor.”

Delahnie Bain

“And this is not just your office here.”

Carolyn Reynolds

“No, because like I said, we are the secretariat and we have fourteen agencies, members of the network. And I did send out—because to send out a statement like this we need to hear from our members and so we had that correspondence with our members to get the okay to put in a press release. Degrading women, doing pictures of women; this is not the first time and it has to stop. We’re really saying it has to stop. The media needs to take some responsibility in doing things like this because as women and I—I would like to speak personally—but on behalf of the network, seeing women like that really puts us in a bad position, especially with the work we’re doing, trying to eliminate domestic violence. This itself is a form of violence; that’s emotional violence because how does it impact her?  The women In Politics Project that is being done through the National Women’s Commission, the present government is in full support of it, and now to have this in their newspaper, that’s double standards and we really noh… we are not with that.  We need to take a stand, and yes, we all—everyone needs to take responsibility for our actions. So he might say that for her with her picture, but he also has a responsibility as a journalist. That’s really poor journalism.”

Reynolds emphasized that the short article attached to the picture is not even about Tillett, it’s about her brother, Nelson Tillett, who recently lost a convention in Cayo North and pleaded guilty to an offence of domestic violence. That, she says, makes the publishing of the picture even more distasteful. News Five tried several times to reach Ann-Marie Williams, the Executive Director of the National Women’s Commission, for comment on the publication as well as Wednesday’s mini protest. But she was always either out of the office or in a meeting and our calls were not returned.

I can’t figure out why you all are wasting your time boycotting a sleezy newspaper that don’t sell in the first place. Mr Noble is sleezy and always will be sleezy so leave all the sleeze balls alone. I really don’t see how this picture will affect what Ms Tillet is doing in reference to her job. She should hold her head up high because much worse pictures have been posted of our Beautiful Belizean women in the past and i’m sure they survived it. They should take all that time and energy that they are wasting on these no good people and focus it on something more positive. i have learned that when you ignore idiots, eventually they will back off because they are they only ones looking like a damn fool. You are giving them the exact reaction that they were looking for and now all the perverts will run out and buy their piece of $#!% newspaper just to view that picture. To make it even worse is that the article wasn’t even about her which tells you the character of Mr Noble and his croonies…sleeze to the 4th power.

Why the fuss over this woman, this is not the first time she has been in the news. Remember the gun incident? Please act respectful and you will not have to face scandals like these.
    Move on.

The crux of the matter is that we are all born of women, fathered female children and are married to them. IF THAT ISN’T GROUNDS ENOUGH TO RESPECT WOMEN AND NOT EXPLOIT THEIR MISTAKES FOR PETTY POLITICAL PROPAGANDA, THEN MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON OUR SOULS. ALFONSO NOBLE, JOE BRADLEY AND JULIET THIMBRIEL WILL HAVE THEIR GOLIATH DAY…………..SOON GUYS………VERY SOON………JUST BE WARY OF THE SHADOWS……I WILL COME BACK TO BLOG ABOUT IT WHEN IT COMES TO PASS………JUST BE WARY OF THE SHADOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Disgusted! says:

And people…… 2 wrongs does not make a right. If miss Tillett was wrong to post that picture on the internet then Alfonso Noble is guilty of using for purpose that he did.

everyone in belize already knows the truth about gina t . . . what’s the big deal?

do we really want to pretend this is a “woman’s issue?’

i mean, unless you’re used to seeing gina drunk and half-naked, you can barely recognize her!

    that was the point right?
