Opposition Leader says Marcel Cardona spoke the truth about U.D.P.

John Briceño

The Leader of the Opposition John Briceño along with Florencio Marin and Francis Fonseca left the chamber after the Marcel meltdown. After giving his speech, the Orange Walk East Representative rushed outside got into his vehicle and drove off denying media interviews. Briceño was also ready to leave when he was asked whether or not he would welcome Cardona to his party. Briceño was pleased that a duly elected U.D.P. representative is not happy with his own party and government.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“I think that he has been mistreated by his own government and as an elected representative I think he needs to stand up and speak for his people.  And if he feels that his people are not being respected, if he believes that his people are not getting the goods and services as the Minister of Works likes to say; he is standing up for his people.”

Jose Sanchez

“It sounds like he wants to join the P.U.P.”

John Briceño

“Well I think you all need to look at the constitution. There is no such thing about crossing the floor—that’s not allowed in the constitution. He would have to resign and there would have to be another election in Orange Walk East.”

Jose Sanchez

“He expressed that he said he came from a P.U.P. family; he had a lot of love for the P.U.P. today. Would you be willing to accept him in your party?”

John Briceño

“Well he was right about one thing that he did come from a strong P.U.P. family. His mother and his uncles and everybody, they’ve been members of the P.U.P. and for whatever reason he decided that he wanted to support the U.D.P. and I guess it is something that he has regretted dearly.”

Jules Vasquez, 7 News

“If there is a practical limitation of crossing the floor, would you at least encourage him to continue to make fire from the back bench?”

John Briceño

“Well it is good for us that he could be right there within the U.D.P. causing and pointing out all the deficiencies of the government because it has—also when we speak, people say well you are in the opposition. But he is a member of their own government and he has been expressing his frustration just like the rest of Belizeans. The frustrations in crime, in getting a job, the issue of the economy, in getting the services that he needs for his people and that is all across this country. I don’t know in what planet these ministers of the U.D.P. live, but they certainly don’t live on planet Earth and certainly not in Belize.”

Jose Sanchez

“Like your own song says, would you be willing to welcome him to the party?”

John Briceño

“Well we in the P.U.P., we welcome everyone. You all here right here, you are welcome. Jules we are certainly welcome to have you in the P.U.P. We’re getting there, close.”

The house debate continued until five this evening and we’ll have more on the budget later in the newscast.
