Visually Impaired Youth reaches the pinnacle of mountain
As we reported on Friday, twelve year old Rowan Garel completed his grueling two-day campaign to the summit of Victoria Peak in an effort to raise funds for the annual summer program organized by the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired. The task was undertaken when Rowan learned that the summer camp had lost some major sponsors last year. Along with his father and a team of climbers, the completely blind student began his ascent to the mountaintop on Wednesday and, despite the physical toll, accomplished a feat that most backpackers are not able to do. Images of Rowan’s incredible journey to the second highest point in the country were posted on a website that was developed to update the public on the adventure. The team was also accompanied by News Five cameraman Alex Ellis who captured the entire expedition on camera. Over the next few days Channel Five will be airing a feature presentation on the ascent to Victoria Peak. Rowan Garel will appear on Channel Five’s Open Your Eyes on Tuesday morning.
