Sugar Cane Season getting on track

And in the north, after numerous hitches, the 2011 sugar cane season appears to be getting back on track. The Belize Sugar Industries Tower Hill factory was temporarily closed in February when both turbines at the BELCOGEN power plant malfunctioned. It reopened on March fifth, when one turbine was fully repaired. The second broiler has now been returned to Belize from Guatemala, but it is not yet in operation until a static seal is repaired next week. The inflow of quality cane from farmers has been consistent since the reopening of the factory, but the re-commissioning of the second turbine is expected to boost the processing. Meanwhile, the production target of one hundred and fifteen thousand tons of sugar is still within reach if the weather is not a deterrent when the rainy season sets in.
