Mechanic shot on Tigris Street

In our newscast on Monday night, we reported that six persons had been shot over the weekend; two did not survive the gunfire. Early this morning, a shooting in the heart of a known hotspot on the south side of Belize City has landed a marine mechanic in the trauma room at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Sometime shortly before seven o’clock this morning thirty-seven year old Charles Heusner, a resident of Tigris Street left home to purchase breakfast on nearby Plues Street when he was assailed by a lone gunman who, sources say, let loose as many as nine shots at him. Heusner, who was hit a total of five times, managed to ride his bicycle in the direction of the Mesopotamia Police Substation on Dean Street where he collapsed as a result of his injuries. News Five spoke with his mother Bertha Heusner who told us how she learned of her son’s shooting.

“Well I got the news; I went to Belmopan this morning. Like six-thirty I took the bus to go to the Lands Department and as the bus landed eight o’clock the phone rang and they tell me Charlie get shot. What! I said right. I got stunned, we walked out and I gone to mi sister, I have a sister in Belmopan and that’s how my nephew brought me back to the hospital.”

“I understand that he left his home on Tigris Street to go and buy breakfast at the point where he got shot.”

“He gone buy Johnny Cake dah Plues Street, buy Johnny Cake and he told me he buy the Johnny Cake and he rode up Plues Street into South Street and that’s where they shot him. But he didn’t even realize he got shot until the other shots hit him noh.”

“He was approached from behind by a fair complexion male person who opened fire at him. He was hit around five times and [uhm] he continued riding his bicycle where he collapsed on Dean Street. Mr Heusner was transported to the KHMH where he is listed in a serious but stable condition. First of all Mr. Heusner is not involved in any gang activities. We’re looking at a hard working individual; a contributor to society and for us to associate him with any gang would be unfair to him. This is a shooting that we would have to say is isolated from the usual gang related shootings but at the same time we still need to establish the motive f this shooting. For us to say that this is directly associated to the spate of shootings that took place over the weekend that would be an unfair statement.”

“I know Charlsie, he’s my son for thirty-seven years and who woulda know ah more than me right, not him. He is not a liability to this country. He’s an asset. He’s a certified marine mechanic. How many of them [do] we have in Belize? He’s in demand.”
The shooting of Charles Heusner comes three days after the vicious murder of nineteen year old Shamir Medina in the same neighborhood last Friday. Heusner was hit multiple times to the left hip, right foot, right upper back and left chest. Belize City police are now looking for one suspect in connection with the early morning shooting.

I think these guys are simply trigger happy. They have nothing better to do than to go around shooting randomly at innocent people like its the wild wild west. Hope they catch him soon.

This person is not affililiated with any gang but it is still a gang related crime as anyone can see these people are targeted based on where they live, hang out, or you may just be passing by that area. certain areas in the city are associated with rival gangs and therefore if one of mine gets shot today I will shoot 2 of yours (anybody in that neighborhood) tomorrow. channel 5 and 7 need to stop showing every evening mothers crying police brutality for their little Junie who just smoke weed and teef sometime, e no deserve that. Allow the police to deal with the criminal element in our society, the coverage is seriously slanted towards the criminals. these crying moms do a much better job of presenting their case than Yearwood.

When I left Bz in 1970, to come to the United States; there was no shootings nor killings happening in Bz. And that is because there were no guns on the streets. HOW DID ALL THESE GUNS CROSS THE BORDER? We have to hold the Gov responsible. And Bz had a night life! They had (3) movie theaters and the stores closed at 9:00 pm. Now downtown Bz is completely dark at 6:00 pm. The movie theaters closed, I guess, because Bz has TV now, and belizeans stay home and watch TV. In the UK the cops don’t even carry guns. The Gov needs to focus on getting the GUNS off the streets and out of the hands of the criminals. And it seems like that is easier said than none…
I agree with “blind eye Jamesie”, but the truth is, the Police are better at street justice than they are at putting together a winning case, so much so that even mediocre lawyers are considered unbeatable in Court. The end result is a crime rigged city, a bunch of crooks in High Public offices, and Cabinet, outnumbering the few good and competent cops left on the BPF.

Well, with all the crime, shootings and killings happening in Bz, it’s just a shame. We’re talking about kids being raise in that inviroment. Bz is their home. And it does’nt matter how bad the neighborhoods are, people still live in all those neighborhoods. Therefore, if you living their, you know who all the criminals and thugs are, but they’re afraid to speak – up. Only when the victim is one of their family members, then it is a problem.
We need that PRISON FARM………WHERE CULPRITS WHO COMMIT THESE CRIMES are sent TO WORK.

My fellow belizeans,it is always easier to lay the blame of our social ill’s on our government,or on the backs of hard working belizeans.Well i believe everything starts at home,some of these mother’s sit infront of the camera,and cry about the injustice being carried out against their sons,the same one’s that prey upon innocent hard working belizeans.These same mother’s that is fully aware of the criminal activities their son’s and daughter’s are involved in,condone those activities by looking the other way.PUP or UDP,none of which has belize at heart,belize is merely a stepping stone to enrich themselves,we as belizeans need to learn how to be better judges of character,before voting in politicians that will be looking out for the good of you,and the area you live in,they should be looking out for the good of the entire country of belize.A lot of our fellow belizeans has grown accustomed to free hand out’s,which has become a burden to our working class.
