Robbery suspect’s family and friends persistent threats to victim

Rosa Sanchez

There have been constant reports of harassment of witnesses to crimes. As recent as a week ago, the police asked the media not to report that a murder witness had been threatened. But friends of a man accused of robbery have allegedly been persistent in their attempts to unlawfully end the case. It started as a robbery in November 2010, when two of four men identified as Justin Grant and one Allen, held up Jesus Navarro and his sixteen year old nephew in the Conch Shell Bay area of Belize City. As a result, eighteen year old Grant was arrested and charged on the twenty-fifth of March, 2011 for two counts of Robbery. But three days after the arrest, Navarro had to make a follow up visit to the Police Department.

Tiffany Grant

He said that on the twenty eight of March, while he was at work, he was approached by Rosa Sanchez and Tiffany Grant and another female relative of Grant, who told him; “If you don’t drop the case against Justin by four o’clock you will get killed.” As a result of this report, forty five year old Rosa Sanchez, nineteen year old Tiffany Grant, and twenty three year old Marleza Edwards were jointly arrested and charged for the crime of Attempt Suppression of Evidence.  But it did not end there because the Grant supporters are accused of more intimidation tactics.  Earlier today, it is reported that Navarro was approached by another relative of Grant who took a picture of him as a form of intimidation.  Police are seeking one person in connection with this report.

We all know that witness intimidation is the norm in Belize hence the reason why there are so many unsolved murders and high profile criminal cases declared nolle prosequi if and when they do end up before the courts. This however, is brazen and utter disregard for law on an extreme scale. These women should be dealt with to the harshest extent of the law and sentenced to the maximum penalty that this blatant crime incurs. My God, when will the horror end??? Despite all this mayhem and madness, the minister of police have still not come forward to address the crime situation in Belize. Long live Democracy!!!

Mami looks like she has no soul & baby girl is pissed off because she cannot find hers. Lock them up & deny them bail. Witness intimidation should be treated as murder & since these people have made their intentions clear, do not wait around for the phone call to pick up Navarro’s body. If he backs off, these fools will not stop. He may as well stop by after work & let them decide how much of his paycheck he will be allowed to keep from now on.

  6. Calvin Garbutt says:

Our societal problems begin at home, if parents are willing to encourage, defend and join thier kids in criminal acts, then our nation on a whole is is serious trouble

  7. Byrd says:

There will be no end to this madess, until the Gov implement new laws. Say 10 yrs for tampering and threating with witnesses. The Gov is not doing enough, implement new laws for these fools….

  8. daveyt says:

Wait! They are only charged with Attempt Suppression of Evidence? What about use of threatening words? Either way, they made Bail, on the grounds that they do not interfere with the witnes – the very same person that they threated, saying that if he didn’t drop the charges, he’d be killed?????????

WTF is going on in this country?????? They should be on remand, taken off the streets and kept well away from the witness! The next headline will be that he’s been shot dead, and the Police have made no arrests!!!!!!

  9. enuff mein! says:

and guess what??????? they probably will all get off scott free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Bukut says:

what if the threat was made to the PM or one of his family members? would the charges against the perpetrators be so weak? I highly doubt that! They would be locked away….we need truth and rights and justice! Equality for all before the law. Do unto others as you would want them to do unto yourself! Jeeez….if anything happen to Mr. Navarro that would be a double whammy! You are to be a victim of a crime and suffer in silence because if you go to the relevant auhtorities to seek justice they complicate the situation even more and jeopardize your life. Stop with the idiotic and callous behavior and be professional BPD!

  11. Justice says:

Once they are out they will still carry out their threats. It has happened before and the police did nothing about it. Why are so many witnesses refusing to testify? The sad part is after they do kill they will get away. It is a pity someone cannot kill them before.Poor Belize!

  12. smooth as the come says:

Im ashamed to be a Belizean, ashamed to be connected to a country which such disgrace. The goverment needs to address the Comission of England or whom ever they need to speak to, to reactivate the execution process/ death sentence in Belize. in Belize.Im convinced thats the only way to take back control of this country.

  13. chups says:

The authorities need assure the public at large that they ARE PRESENT AND THAT THEY WILL DO THEIR JOB. With that in mind, the perpetrators of this crime of intimidation need be made an example of.
