$3,500 for a life

2011-03-30

Forty-one year old Mark Conorquie, a resident of Carmelita Village who was found guilty of causing death by careless conduct after knocking down Maurice Sedacey in 2009 was today fined for the fatality.  On July twenty-seventh, 2009, fifty-nine year old Sedacey was riding his bicycle along the Northern Highway in the area of Sand Hill when he was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup driven by Conorquie.  Sedacey was badly injured and later succumbed to his injuries.  In court this morning testimonies were heard on Conorquie’s behalf before Justice Herbert Lord.  On March twenty-third he was found guilty of causing the accident; charges which Lord told Conorquie carry a penalty of two years in prison.  Lord, however, did not impose a jail term.  Instead he fined Conorquie three thousand, five hundred dollars of which he must pay two thousand dollars by July thirty-first.  He was also ordered to pay Sedacey’s family ten thousand dollars, a third of which is to be paid by the end of September.

  6. Disgusted! says:

A man gets sentenced to 3 years in jail for a petty misdemeanor of which he couldn’t pay a fine forthwith and in the same courts, this man gets a slap on the wrist and is released back into society after taking another’s life due to gross irresponsible recklessness. Three beers and a coke values more than a human life! LONG LIVE THE BELIZEAN VERSION OF JUSTICE, EQUALITY AND DEMOCRACY!!!

  7. Sugar says:

do the many other organizations call this justice??? wonder where is that lady who like camera?? U miss this opportunity Miss belizean for justice

  8. belizeanfirst says:

Trust me this is better justice than those families or loved ones of killed persons who never get a penny despite the fact the person killed (by a wreckless driver or drunken driver) was the bread winner of the family!! Who has ever followed the story last year where a Musa kid killed a humble hard working family bread winner on the Northern Highway? Where the young Musa was drinking but family hurriedly cleaned up the vehicle of the alchohol so when police arrived there was nothing there? I would not be surprised that the police appearing there were paid off by the family. How many more humble innocent pple will die without justice because the culprit is a kid of a financially well off family? The poor victim’s family in this case was not in the country and were immigrants who may have been threatened. You can find the kid at the Tavern, and other places still consuming alcohol. Has taken a life of a human being and is living like nothing happened protected by mom and dad! How is that for Belizean justice for you?
