Traffic along the Northern Highway near mile six came to a screeching halt shortly before midday following a head-on collision involving two pickup trucks. For about a quarter of a mile in either direction vehicles lined the busy thoroughfare as traffic and police officers processed the scene. Leonardo Morales, an employee of St. John’s College, says he was driving his Toyota Tacoma in the direction of Ladyville when an oncoming Hilux collided into him.
Voice of: Leonardo Morales, Accident Victim
“Bally just come from behind a vehicle and overtake and run right into me. I couldn’t avoid he.”

“Do you know if the driver of the other vehicle was badly injured?”
Voice of: Leonardo Morales
“Well I see he get a cut pan ih head and pan ih hand. I noh really pay much attention to he.”
“And in terms of the response from the Traffic Department or from the police, what was that like?”
Voice of: Leonardo Morales
“Well the policeman di tell me I alright. I eena di right because then whole ah fi he vehicle deh pan my hand. He deh completely pan my hand, whole ah fi he vehicle.”
On the shoulder of the road the mangled wreckage of the late model pickup protruded from the nearby bushes. Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the accident.
“Can you say if he was driving above the prescribed speed limit for this stretch of the highway?”
Voice of: Leonardo Morales
“Well he [mih] di go like fifty miles an hour round the…and overtake pan di cover and automatically he do di wrong thing.”
According to Morales the driver of the other vehicle, a Chinese national, suffered varying degrees of injury because the airbag on his driver’s side failed to deploy during the impact. He was immediately transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
Here’s a sober and true line from Stephen Gaghan`s Syriana screenplay:
Arash: The Chinese are smart people, but such bad drivers.
Haven’t people LEARNED TO DRIVE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD??????????
We may be British but………………….This is not England…..
makes me wonder on the hilux why the airbag didnt deploy ??? hmm maybe because they are third world vehicles they dont put much interest on safety.
maggie……..THAT IS SUCH AN UNNECESSARY RACIAL STATEMENT…..regardless of the source.
maybe the air bag switch was off…happy that there were no lost of lives.
you cannot turn off the drivers airbag only the passenger side and thats the only airbag that deployed the passengers an the drivers airbag didnt!! something is definitely wrong
Need to stop selling drivers licenses, send people to driving school and most of all we need some highway patrols A.S.A.P…. and vigorouse charges . Belize is losing its youths to gangs and accidents and fewer to drugs…
