2 Chinese women brutally murdered
The government is in crisis mode, there were four murders in Belize City over the weekend. Statistically, since the beginning of the year, there are a total of thirty-three murders; that’s eight more than there were at this time last year, an increase of thirty-two percent. We’ll have the Prime Minister’s reaction later but a theory that the murders were retaliatory against gang suppression is not conclusive. Of the four homicides, three persons were killed in a span of twelve hours on Saturday and two victims were of Chinese origins. The Chinese community is stunned and furious at the senseless murders of two of their own women; they organized quickly and by this morning, they closed businesses and took to the streets in protest. They didn’t even have a permit but they were determined to send an unequivocal message. News Five’s Marion Ali reports on this morning’s protest.

Between four and five hundred Chinese business persons from as far south as Toledo and as far west as Cayo, assembled as early as eight this morning in front of the country’s court buildings on Regent Street to signal their utter disdain and complete denunciation to Saturday’s ruthless attacks against two community members.

The first victim, thirty-two year old Yan Ying Chen, was shot to her left shoulder, chest and back inside Rose Grocery on King Street just after one on Saturday afternoon. She died within ten minutes at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Police say that Chen was inside the shop when a youth approached her grill door and opened fire.
The Police Department’s Gang Suppression Unit later interception four suspects and also discovered a loaded black pistol through Rowland’s Alley off King Street.

The second woman whose life was cut short less than two hours later was thirty six year old Fei Lan Wu, a mother of two, who, like Chen, was gunned down inside her shop on Faber’s Road. She was shot to the lower right side of her back just before three on Saturday afternoon and died around five that same evening.
The protestors, who endured the scorching sun today; bore two caskets, pictures of the victims, and placards expressing their disgust, as they marched a four mile-long circuit that took them past the Queen Street Police Station, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions near New Road and the Ombudsman’s Office further up on New Road.
There were moments when the angry mob stormed the Police and Prison buses as they arrived at the courthouse to process prisoners—wanting to get their hands on the murder suspects. But the suspects did not make it to court in the morning. In fact, by the time the protestors had dispersed by one, no one was charged yet for the murders. They also spoke to the media.

“Change the law” and “hang the murderers” was the common chant of the protestors. And as the march neared its end, a group of them attacked a Belizean who for several minutes hurled malicious attacks at them. That did not bode well for him, because the police had to quickly come to his aid and lock him away until the crowd moved on to end the protest. Reporting for News Five, I am Marion Ali.

What good will capital punishment do if the police are unable to even get a conviction on violent crimes? It’s easy to understand that people are angry and want to see someone pay for these terrible crimes, but no one ever gets convicted. We don’t have forensics, we don’t have a well equipped or trained police force. Joining the police is not something that the best in our community want to do because there is no respect for them. Until we can actually start getting convictions what’s the point of calling for capital punishment – you’d only have an empty gallows to look at – or, at worse, innocent people being hanged for crimes they did not commit. People love to call on capital punishment until one of their loved ones is wrongfully convicted and sent to hang.
It took the normally peaceful Chinese people to take to the streets in protest because Belizeans are !$%#@ng cowards!!! I wished the 2 #@$%ards had been taked to court so that these people could have executed vigilante justice. My God…..how much more of this madness will Belizeans endure before these callous, heartless murderers are brought to justice??? How many more families will mourn??? First off, no one – for no reason whatsoever – deserves to have a loved one taken from them unduly and before their time, no matter what their national or ethnic origin. That said however, there are two sides to every story.
I submit that in their own subtle ways the Chinese/Taiwanese community has also been slowly killing Belizean people; especially poor, Black people. When the situation is such that Belizeans cannot even compete in the small business sector because foreigners who buy the bulk of their stock from their country of origin and SEND the bulk of their profits to their country of origin, then, that is a form of genocide.
Get a job they say? They only hire their own kind, or Central Americans at the very most. Genocide again. Belizeans are only interested in using drugs? Their community doesn’t have any problem selling the alcohol or “bamboo” – even to minors. No my friends, life is a b!%@h but it also has a way of balancing injustices, whether these injustices are realised or not.

@ fromafar – I hate to see how (some) belizeans living abroad can put down Belize. Yes we have voilence but we are no different than any town, city or country in the world. Maybe you have the luck of having tons of money or live in a gated community from which it is easy to put down Belize. The voilence is horrible, i will agree with you on that. But before you bring down Belize look at your community and if it is free of violence and crime then tell us how you got there so we may attempt to make such changes in Belize. And yes the Triads would be a good idea….My condolences to the family of all of those murdered in Belize. MyLegacyB4MyPeople, Belizean parents & their misguided loyalty is the biggest handicap that afflicts us. We had a mother & her daughter arrested last week for threatening a crime victim’s life because their worthless kin does not deserve to be punished for his crime. I personally called a parent to tell her what her child was doing because as a parent I felt she should know & above all else stop glorifying thuggish, criminal behavior. I also called the victims mother to make sure she knew that her other children were at risk. When the child was confronted, the lying & crying began, rather than tell this peach to cut the crap, the mother’s response was to call & threaten my life. Everyone associated with this person is dead, wounded or in jail.
Ignorance & that sense of entitlement is killing us. When any mother chooses to bury her children for the few dollars it takes to buy her silence, please tell us how her spawns can have a conscience.

It was less than 6 months ago that we took to the street by joining the funeral procession of little Eyannie Nunez, with a COUNTRYWIDE SHUTDOWN. That was about 70 murders ago and a distant memory for many Belizeans in La La Land.

Ok… I am a Belizean living in Dallas TX, and I am a hundred percent behind the chinese people and their community. I am glad some one stepped up to face the laws and government of Belize. This is something Belzeans should have been doing. Instead they sit back and wait for some magical thing to happen. Sorry in today;s world you have to speak up. I love my Belizean people, i just dont like the way they think. These Killers need to get a message, and I assure it wont stop but it will slow down. Thanks Oscar965. I too agree; those living abroad think it is easier to dismiss Belize altogether instead of looking for more workable solutions. And indeed, these days we are hardpressed to find utopias free of violence and crime. I am instead saddened that my beloved Belize has come to this. But I am not sure capital punishment is the answer since it is evident the courts cannot even secure convictions. It is unfortunate that the innocent have become the sacrificial lambs!

I am disappointed that the Indian community did not join at least in a one day protest by shutting down their shops! More so that the Belize Chamber did not all request even the Belizean businesses to participate in a one day shut down too!!! So when the innocent baby on Faber’s road was hailed with bullets and the innocent young girl was shot in fron of her home, or when children of any age get caught in gunfire just walking home from school, it is not AN URGENT situation to have a press conference!!!!! Nobody finds that ALARMING enough to come up with solutions. But two Chinese women get murdered and all of a sudden Dean Barrow and Singh realize the value of life! This should have been their response and attitude from the time innocent kids started to get caught in crossfire. Isn’t their life worthy??? The situation about crime in belize city has reached unimaginable level. The situation is much more than what we can think. If people do not have a job, how can they survive? If we have families that do not instruct their kid, how can we have good families. if there are drug dealers, how can we protect our own kids from dropping into this or even joining the gangs . I think government should look at all these problems. i was in belize city last month just for 3 hr. We circles some streets and i notice all the streets we travelled that there were no police visible on the streets. I saw one police vehicle diving amara avenue, one only with two police on the back of the vehicle. I no wonder why there are so much killing in the city. Criminals can kill , rob, assault, etc. and there is no police.
Suggestion: put the bdf in pairs at every corner of the city, especially at the crowded areas of the city. have the police patrol on vehicle , foot , bicycle. have survey cameras on the hot areas. get volunteers to survey certain areas of the city, have direct communication with the soldiers at each corner so that they can radio the police when they suspect a crime, put check point at all entrance of the city to control any gun going into the city. There are much more that can be done. You can not fight crime only by putting or modifying our laws. The police department need more equipment. the government should get more trained prosecutors, lawyers etc. But do something mr. Barrow.
It has been seen over and over again, murders, robberies, all kinds of crimes, yet there is no remedy in sight. That aside, the cost of living increasing everyday, is there anyone out there that has noted any difference as to government since the UDP came into “action” cause I haven’t!!!! are they any different from the PUP? Different thieves, different faces!!!! Anyways am looking to head out this country because am not going to continue making politicians richer. To hell with Amnesty International, they do not have to live in the conditions the country is. The Bible says an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Killing has become a sport in Belize. I am proud of the Chinese people, if the Belizean would join these people and begin to protest in the streets the government would take notice. honestly, i don’t think capital punishment is the best answer. to solve this problem, let’s get to the root of the problem. and guess what the real problem is… poverty. the government. 12.5% consumer tax? really?! even in the US the highest sales tax is 9.65 and that’s in one of the most prosperous states. the problem is poverty, when there’s no money to buy bread, people do the inevitable. com’on mr. barrow, take care of your people from the root, educate your youth, take care of the poor. 12.5-15% IS DAMN RIDICULOUS.

@Oscar965, what fromafar expressed was the frustration all Belizeans feel. Money does not insulate people from the pain of losing someone. Many of us have reached out, many of us have come home for vacations instead of spending our disposal income elsewhere. There is no Utopia even in gated communities but not being able to walk from our hotels to the market or stand @ the window @the panades or meat pie shop without fear is insane. We have to be prepared to run or duck because we cannot tell who is in those vehicles with blackened windows & are relieved when we see a friendly face. The joy I felt as a Belizean was having the ability to walk from one end of Belize to another, stopping at Bridge foot, buying something I really didn’t need from a vendor I have known most of my life & introducing my children to her, watching my children goh dah shap with their cousins & seeing the joy on their faces as they embraced our culture. While chances are our children will not get shot on a visit, no responsible parent who is aware of the situation will put their children in a war zone. We are frustrated because the Belize we remembered, dirty canals & all has been replaced by something none of us envisioned. We are tired of being bitten & taken for suckers every time we reach out to help our people. Every broke Belizean I know has a cell phone with more bells & whistles than mine & too many will kill for those worthless gadgets, that breeds fear not confidence.

The chinese people at least know they have to work for a living, unlike the Belize people who expect the government to give them everything. Big healthy men sit all day under house bottoms and drink Bilikin beer and gamble instead of using what brain they have left to find out what honest work they can do or business they can start to take care of their families. It is a lack of love and nurturing that sends these kids out into the arms of the criminals who are all too willing to teach them the trade. Chabelli look at things in the right perspective. This is what is wrong with Belizeans they do not think sequentially, no one reason things out, it is only black and white, like you talking about the chinese dont care about you all. Shi,t until you start caring for yourself no one else will care for you. What are they suppose to do to show they care for you, give you their money, feed you, build you a house, what do you want them to do to show they care for you. Your own government dont care for you, so shut up and be constructive.

In reality when you think about what this world is getting to you wish you were never part of it. The PM came up with many thoughts and plans that accordingly he would decrease crime level in this country but in reality this will never be done on man’s power. The world is coming to an end and this is just signs of the occurrence. Yeah many murders have occured of which many have not been resolved. My brother was killed 2 years ago and the murderer yet cannot go on trial what is he doing on remand getting fatter each day. Capital punishment might and might not be solution we are all humans and if we lose a relative yeah that murderer wil no longer be in the streets but what about his family.
TO MY OPINION CAPITAL PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE ENFORCED AS LONG AS ACTUS REUS AND MENS REA IS PRESENT!!!!!!!THIS IS WHAT I CALL JUSTICE!!
