Swindler takes water taxi operator for a $6,000 ride

Michael Rodriguez

A man who claims he is a private consultant with the government is in all kinds of trouble with the law after he was charged with two counts of Obtaining Property by Deception.  Twenty-six year old Michael Rodriguez, a resident of Ladyville, also has five previous convictions for the same charge, and an outstanding fine of three thousand dollars.  The latest charges against Rodriguez are as a result of a complaint by businessman, twenty-eight year old Myron Marin, who told police that between February tenth and March fifth, Rodriguez allegedly visited his work place on North Front Street and was paid just over six thousand dollars in exchange for nine parcels of land, three of which were to be in San Pedro Town and three in the Belama Phase two area.  But according to Marin, when he checked at the Lands Department, he discovered that he had been hoodwinked.  This afternoon, Rodriguez was represented in Court by Attorney Dickie Bradley who asked the court to offer his client bail.  But Magistrate Sharon Frazer denied him bail until he can pay his outstanding fines.

“also has five previous convictions for the same charge, and an outstanding fine of three thousand dollars.” <— so why didn't he get prison time after the second…why do we keep giving lenient charges and fines that we never collect…i swear vicitims will always loose more than these rats

  5. cayogial says:

It Seems he has been taking the Justice System for a ride as well. This guys has been getting away with numerous scams even in Cayo; asking for donations and claiming he was under the employment of the San Ignacio Town Board.

  6. cayogial says:

Send his A$$ to jail. People have to start taking responsibility for their actions. I know this comment is cliche; but ” if you do the crime you gotta do the time”…simple!

  7. rc says:

a law should be passed for those legal criminals known as attorneys, they know the law so very well and what is right from wrong, and set criminals free on stupid ‘technicalities’ of the case.

  8. The People Had Enough says:

I agree with Earl, who the hell sells 9 parcels of land for $6 grand? That fool got what he deserve, greedy bastard.

  9. BZNinCALI says:

Your Honor, poverty made him do it, he needed the money & scammed a greedy sucker who just knew he was getting over.

  10. Disgusted! says:

My gawd, this guy has a criminal record for a series of the same crime and despite that he was released back into society to perpetrate the same scam against unsuspecting victims??? Somebody pleeeeeease tell me where these magistrates steal their law degrees from. He couldn’t or refused to pay the outstanding court fine but he has money to retain dickie bradley????? Then, to add insult to injury, dickie commissions for him to get bail???????? Somebody pleeeeeeeease tell me what is going on in Belize!!!!!!!! Oh what a day it will be when ONE person too many gets enough of these attorneys and magistrates who manipulates the justice system and allow criminals to walk free. OH WHAT A DAY IT WILL BE!!!!!!!

  11. Marcos Canul says:

This young man has a series of charges in Cayo but the Police play like they don’t know where he lives to serve him a summons. The Star newspaper in Cayo brought up his story with a photograph of the perpetrator but still he could not be found until now when he swindled another person. He has been getting away because he is the son of a former Commissioner of Lands & Surveys and aligned with the UDP. Check!

My husband and I were also a victim of this low-life. He didn’t get much from us, but still, as I suspected and voiced my opinion, if it sounds too good to be true, most likely its a lie. This scum-bag took us to an old man to sign a document attesting to this land deal. The old coot was in on the scam as well. Perhaps even the police are involved (receiving a cut) and this is why this guy isn’t locked up. Who knows. But the next time I’m there and see him, I’m going to walk up to him and slap the taste out of his mouth. I dare them to lock me up!!!!!!

  13. A mad tourist says:

Too bad Belize allows bastards like Mike to operate right under their noses. I never believed this guy was legit and voiced my opinion of him right to his face. But, because my husband wanted to give “a young black man a chance” I was overruled. That slut he calls his cousin (light-skinned, ugly tramp) which in fact is his girl-friend, should also be locked up along with Michael and the old “retired” judge who signed the documents attesting to the bogus land deal.
