I do not believe it is about local or foreign commissioner. The problem we have will continue regardless of the origin of the person in the top office. What will make a difference is having a commissioner that is willing to hold his people responsible for their actions. I believe thate is a lot of corruption in the police force and unless the corruption is addressed, the problems will continue regardless of whether the commissioner is from Belize or otherwise.
If we had a British Commissioner of Police as we did under Colonial days perhaps we would go back to the days when murder was a rare occurrence. I keep hearing that its the politicians who are providing the weapons for the gangsters and the police are being paid off.
You try bribing a British Policeman and see how far you get.
A foreign commissioner of police may not necessarily reduce crime immediately, however it could influence some major changes in terms of how the Dept. is run, which in turn may influence morale in the Dept. and eventually this may have some very effective reduction in some criminal activities.
Will he be able to fire rogue cops that were tolerated by the present ComPol? Will he be given a budget to obtain basic resources badly needed to investigate crime effectively? Will he be able to hire a team of trustworthy people as his immediate subordinates? Or instead, will he be just another taxpayer’s money consumer and seat warmers, like the two UDP’s Ministers of Police, with THE FAMOUS LIST of the UNTOUCHABLES, or ‘off limit’, and THE CORRUPT BUT WELL CONNECTED.
Truth is, if the new COMPOL to be has any integrity, he will soon get fed up and pack up and leave before officially taking this job, as I’m sure he’s already chosen. This is no one man show and our GOB is not seeking any ‘wave maker’. They just want another “yes man”. Sadly, it took our dumbo leaders 3 yrs realize that Jefferies doesn’t have an evil twin; that he is the same maniac police seen in action on Independence Hill in Belmopan in 2005, (see Youtube) http://youtu.be/LkLR4nmh28Y
MY CRYSTAL BALL SAYS……..
HE/SHE WILL BE FRUSTRATED BY ( fill the blank………) AND QUIT WITHIN 2YRS
and/or WILL HAVE HIS LIFE THREATENED AND HE WILL LEAVE.
A BELIZEAN WOULD HAVE A VESTED INTEREST…………THIS IS MY HOME more than just A JOB.
I believethat a foreign commissioner can reduce crimes as long as he has no affiliations with this corrupted Government which i think would be impossible.
I can speak a bit but they still have capable police that can run the police department UDP is just looking at spending unnessesary money an at the same time show as if we have dunce in our country its been so since the last british compol hubbs was in office, its just a terrible thing that they are doing, Mr Jefferies was the best street cop that ever took the seat an he will always remain belize top cop no matter what but our government is just some pig headed thinkers, i taught the PM was a so high educated person he should ask me to be the commissioner, for they have a lot of weeding to do in that department an i can stand proud an mention some of them but we are humans so let it sleep. sometimes the same ones are selling the guns to the criminal on the streets an when night falls they go back for it an then beg the criminals to buy them something to eat shame, why don’t they stock up the canteen an get great cooks to cook for these hungry an “RUDE BOY” Policemen. then they will stop go around an beg these drug dealers, its a shame help them for we need them to keep the peace doctors an policemen are the main people that should have a canteen so that they can eat an use their money to do better things for their families, so Mr Minister of Police open your eyes to better things for your department.
Could actually be good if Police Department is happy with the decision. Else, it can cause more chaos in the department.
Hopefully he/she has no direct connections in Belize and can help to rid the department of corrupt elements.
No one person regardless of their background can reduce crime without the support of the Government, adequate staff & trained support personnel as well as a desire & commitment from the community they serve.
Of Course! These policemen are narrow minded and complacent. We need a commissioner that is well exposed and this can only happen with a foreign policeman. If we get a commissioner from Jamaica, I’m sure that he can come up with good strategies on how to diminish crime in Belize. Why? Because he has more exposure that any Belize policemen. I strongly recommend this!
Cutting the crime in Belize would require an ELITE POLICE FORCE from a country that will not take bullshit from the Bz Police, PM, Exec. Their main aim is to reduce crime and hold the criminal responsible by holding him in SOLITARY CONFINEMENT FOR THE DURATION OF HIS SENTENCE. AS weak as Belizeans are, this fool would go crzy in a month, (no perpetration).
Government should be looking at the real problem. The compol should be left to do his/her job. Government official (politicians) should stop interfering in the police duties. If they bring a foreigner and they continue to interfere in the police department the problem will still continue.
From what I’ve read above, the insinuation seems to be that the Police force is the entity responsible for all the crime in Belize. Is this so? While I am not resident in Belize and therefore cannot attest to corruption in that department (or a lack thereof), my heart tells me that the social malaise runs so much deeper. It is, first and foremost, a SPIRITUAL PROBLEM—one that no one seems to want to acknowledge and address.
I’ve stated on several previous occasions that Belize and Belizeans have forsaken the God of our fathers. The evidence is so blatant! The only way our beloved country can be restored (and Lord knows I pray that it is—I want to come home, but to what?) is to start from the Heads of Government returning to righteousness. Again, I repeat, 2 Chronicles 7:14 and 19-22.
And again, I remember the words of our National Prayer—the one I listened to from my childhood on Radio Belize, every evening at 6:00 p.m. in Spanish, and at 11:00 p.m. in English.
“Almighty and Eternal God, who through Jesus Christ has revealed your glory to all nations, please protect and preserve Belize, our beloved country….With Your help, may all our endeavours tend to peace, social justice, the increase of industry, sobriety and useful knowledge….We pray oh God of mercy, that we may be blessed in the knowledge, and sanctified in the observance of Your Most Holy Law…”
We do not pray that anymore, do we? Is it even aired anymore on our many, now privatized, radio stations?
Dear God, PLEASE RESTORE BELIZE!!!
The police force is like a pyramid—if it doesn’t have a strong base who is at the top doesn’t stand a chance on his own. Safe to say he’s got his work cut out for him in trying to ‘whip in shape’ (not Doug Singh’s version of ‘whip in shape’) a police force that has been “comfortable”. It’s like him having to teach his officers how to do their jobs efficiently. Good luck to the brave soul!
lets give it a chance of course it won’t show progress right away, but could bring better plans etc, at least it won’t be appointed politically like always, and hope the new foreighn commioner can get RID OFF THEM !##+!N& CORRUPT POLICE OFFICERS AND if THERE’S GOVERNMENT OFFICALS INVOLVED GET RID OF THEM ALSO.
A foreign Commissioner will not reduce crime for sure…. Government will again be spending the ppl’s money… 1.) salary for foreign compol will be 2 or 3 times more than what the present commissioner was getting and plus free housing and utility bills and vehicle 2.) a foreigner doesn’t know the Belize and out lifestyle, etc.. 3.) will have absolutely no respect for the rest of the dept.
Waste of taxpayers money …. things will not change if harsher penalty for offenders…. we need fi start heng some ppl mein…. I believe human rights/children rights mess up the system… cuz we wan be like the US… not everything we see is good for us…. so i do not welcome a foreign to come and take the place of commissioner in Belize… they are other officers who have worked years and they won’t be getting the opportunity to be compol…. PM your making a big mistake.
I think that a foreign commissioner is a good idea. reason is, he will not be familiar of have no friend in the dept. It is sad to say but most police officers are corrupt and might be allies with one another. so a new person , new to the dept will not tolerate spoil actions because he has no ties to no one. bring in a strict commissioner and the corruption might be reduce
Take a look at what some cities in the US have done to counter gang activity. In New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina, Army National Guard were put in place to patrol the streets. They had full jurisdiction over the people. In New York Bratton cleaned things up with force. Now he has taken over LA to clean up that mess. And he is making good progress. It takes an highly intelligient individual to combat the criminal mind. Look at Jamaica. The Murder rate is down 44% from last year. They put military and police forces in troubled areas. They say they “Saturated” the violent prone areas with overwhelming numbers. That is the only way to counter this aggression that has taken over Belize City. With force and numbers! Operation Jaguar should be permanent in Belize City. BDF should be out in force 24 hours a day! That is the only way to change the behavior of these thugs. Let them hide in their shacks, doing their drugs and listening to bad American Rap Music! Keep them off the street! Profile them. Know who they are and search them when they leave their house. Search their women, who are knowing of their crimes. These are the tactics that work. Beat them down until they can’t be organized. Hang them when they are convicted!
One man in this case cannot make a diffrence, he needs a foreign police force. Truth is if the gov would make police one of the higest paid in the land they will attract better applicants to join the force.
