Gunman was targeting men who helped car driver

Belisle rented the taxi on Saturday morning and had already planned on making runs from a local nightspot.  It is believed that his attacker trained his weapon on the men who came to his assistance and that Belisle was simply at the wrong place.

“He’s a quiet man, you know.  [He] doesn’t trouble anybody.  Like he said, that’s all we do, play checkers.  If you want to say that’s the rivalry then that’s what we had, me against him but it was a friendly thing, you understand me.  He doesn’t have any enemies as such so we can’t say it’s because of gangs that he was shot or anything like that because he doesn’t deal with that at all, you know.  He’s a good man.  That’s all I know about the man you understand me my brother.  It’s like he said he got that car [but] before that to tell you straight up, you know, I always warned the man.  I said “bwai da man done tek weh da car from yo, lef da car deh“, you understand.  But the man said “Kenny I have to do something, I have to do something.  I have to mek wah lee money“ right.  The Thursday that just passed the man said, “bwai ah wah hustle this weekend, I wah hustle this weekend.”  So I said, “Kirk so yo get back di car then?” so he said “Yes mein.  So weh part yo wah play?” I said we’ll be at Tropicana so he said, “Well ah gwein out deh go mek wah lee money.”

“He just got this car.  He got this car Saturday morning, you understand.  He decide to say well he’s going to do his little hustling Saturday night.  I left the man, the last thing I did was to talk to him and told him to take care of himself and that was it.  To know that came to hail me at my house and tell me that I couldn’t believe mien.  When I went and saw the man laid out down there I couldn’t take it mien, I’ll tell you straight, the whole day Sunday I couldn’t eat.  Right up to now I have my food inside there I can’t eat.”

Kirk Belisle was murdered around one-forty-five a.m. on Sunday morning.  Belize City police are still investigating the incident but so far have made no arrests in the matter.
