Cancer Society receives donation

Story PictureFor over a decade the Belize Cancer Society has been fighting a war on this notorious killer. This morning they got some ammunition from Scotiabank in the form of five thousand Canadian dollars: that’s over ten thousand Belize. Cancer Society President, Dr. Alba Mendez Sosa, says the funds will go towards pushing the message of early detection.

Alba Mendez Sosa, President, Belize Cancer Society
“This money provides for awareness of breast cancer. The idea that use this money is awareness and workshops that show and educate the healthcare providers and the population with respect to early detection and prevention of breast cancer.”

Josie Andrews, Marketing Manager, Scotiabank
“At Scotiabank International and part of Scotiabank Belize, we do see the importance when it comes to giving back to the community, especially when it comes to International Women’s Day, especially with women being such a huge part of our organisation. We actually have about seventy percent of our organisation worldwide is comprised of women. We’ve always found it very important to give back to the communities in which we live and work and we see the relevance of that at a time like this.”

One of the Cancer Society’s biggest fundraisers is the annual Cancer Walk, in which participants make the eight mile journey by foot from Celina’s in Ladyville to the Juliet Orosco Soberanis Centre in Belize City. Registration forms for the May thirty-first event can be picked up from the society’s headquarters on Mercy Lane or can be requested by sending an email to belizecancerwalk@yahoo.com.”
