Customs investigating Eric Chang’s vehicle

Eric Chang

City councilor Eric Chang is tonight the subject of an investigation by the Customs & Excise Department following a raid on his home on Wednesday night.  While Chang was not found in possession of any uncustommed goods, it is suspected that duties have not been paid for his vehicle, a late model Isuzu D-Maxx.  The Police Department as well as Customs have remained tightlipped about the investigation but Chang has informed News Five that it is a minor misunderstanding, which will be worked out by early next week.

This shows that Dean Barrow’s GoB is no nonesense when it comes to coruption and illegality. Any other Belizean PM would have sent an emissary to exert some influence at the cUstoms Dept and told them to bow down or lay down.

“A minor misunderstanding, which will be worked out by early next week.” = cash to grease the wheels and ‘lose’ any evidence – taken from the Council coffers (i.e OUR money!!)

  6. daveyt says:

Earl Gray – search warrant or not – at the end of the day, if you’ve not broken the law and haven’t anything to hide, you’d not be worried about a search in the first place………

I don’t understand how there can be a ‘minor misunderstanding’. Either the vehicle was imported legally, all duties & taxes due paid in full and the vehicle was insured and licensed properly or it wasn’t.

If it wasn’t, he broke the law, evaded Customs Duties, and drove with an unlicensed & uninsured vehicle. Good job he didn’t kill anyone on the road if that was the case.

He is not above the law!!!!

  7. Disgusted! says:

He is not above the law and this is not mainland China…….if he breaches the laws of the country or is suspected of being involved in illicit activities, then he is subject to getting his door kicked in with automatic weapons drawn, tazered, kids frightened out of their wits, dogs shot, taken on the Western highway and brutalized and robbed of his cell phone, money and jewelry just like every native Belizeans who suffer these atrocities at the hands of the police. He ain’t Mao Tse Tung…….!!!! Dish it out across the board. If anybody needs to be targeted by the police it’s the criminals who pass under the guise of politicians!!!!!!!

  8. KRTDIAZ says:

This too will pass..Eric is a good person, determined to serve the people and he will be reelected with ease…

In the words of Said….”This lee breeze will blow over”

  9. Concerned citizen x says:

Bwai, I can guarantee he dah one of the cleanest politicians in Belize, and willing to get up at one a.m. To serve! I have never seen a politician that goes out that much as he does, if he gets raided like that, then we should expect more politicians’ house to be kicked down like he had! poor country with no democracy but tyranny, and I think the monarch days seems better than what we have now!

  10. lynlyn says:

He is one of the best councilor you can see in the city council. He works with his crew not only to show up and tell them what to do and then leave them to it. HE works along with them. I don’t know if some people are blind or just be ignorance of what is the truth. But I am sure this is just a small misunderstanding that happens. Never know, someone don’t like him that is why. as it is Belize

  11. James Bond says:

Whoever is in charge of custom & Trafic Depo. Should be taken to jail, why an unpaid duty vehicle can be registered & licensed by trafic Depo. why they made a confusion to the public, I think there’s huge profit between them & the auto dealer, first they let the auto dealer’s cars enter the country without pay anything and then they can sale it with lowest price, this way they can sale it faster. If you bought a car like that, you’ll get !@#$, they’ve been doing this for years, I bet many people knows what I’m saying , but what can we do about it? do we even have law in this country?
