The road to Arenal littered with robberies

Further away the Village of Arenal, near the western border with Guatemala, has a history of armed robberies and violent attacks, believed to be carried out by a group of bandits who operate in the area. On Thursday, two nineteen year olds were held at gunpoint and robbed on the Arenal Road within twenty minutes. First was Mario Cunul, a Guatemalan national who lives in the village. He was riding a bicycle toward Benque Viejo at around four-forty p.m. when he was approached by three armed, masked men—one dressed in camouflage and the other two in dark clothing. Cunil says he was dragged into the bushes and robbed of one hundred and fifty dollars. The men ordered him to keep the incident to himself and then released him.

At five o’clock Griselda Salas, a housewife of Benque Viejo Town, was on her way to Arenal along with her father, Perfecto Salas in a taxi when two masked men emerged from the bushes with handguns. She also described her attackers to police and again one was dressed in camouflage while the other wore dark clothing. The gunmen ordered them to drive down a truck path in the bushes and stole a cell phone, an engagement ring and ten dollars cash from Griselda. And in another similarity to the first report, the robbers told Griselda not to report the incident and that they know where she lives.
