P.S.U. and Belizeans for Justice call for G.O.B. to reinstate Moses Sulph

Moses Sulph was fired weeks ago; no reason was provided, but his termination letter was received following a sleep-over in front of the Prime Minister’s offices in Belmopan in protest of oil exploration. Sulph is the vocal President of COLA and that organization has the support of the Public Service Union, Belizeans for Justice and others calling for his re-instatement as a clerk at the registry. This morning, the Battlefield Park was the venue for a press conference, which was attended by News Five’s Isani Cayetano.

Social activist Moses Sulph was terminated from his post at the General Registry on April eighth following an investigation of his desk a few weeks earlier.  The outspoken president of Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action was fired by GOB for no apparent reason.  In the wake of his dismissal Sulph conferred with executives of the Public Service Union and today he emerged with its full support as well as that of other non-government organizations in taking a stand against what has been perceived as an act of victimization.

“I would like to say that basically at no time as an employee of the registry have I spoken on the behalf of the registry.  What I have done as a duly elected person, president of the COLA organization is fulfill the mandate of that organization.  I will say that my union is dealing with the matter; however, as COLA also I’m a person that stands up for justice and I will continue to stand up for justice.  The issues in this country are enormous and I believe that an organization like COLA, you know, must continue to be at the forefront of calling on government to do what is in the best interest of its people.”

Sulph was targeted following a sleepover in front of the Prime Minister’s office in early February against oil exploration in protected areas.  With the support of P.S.U. president Jackie Willoughby-Sanchez, COLA spoke out against similar instances of injustice; an issue, Willoughby-Sanchez says, is beyond Sulph’s current situation.

“Moses was told immediately after the sleeping over at the Prime Minister’s office that he must remove himself from his desk because an investigation is going to happen.  He made contact with the union where we advised him to continue to go to work every day even though he was advised not to come to work.  Additionally they did not give it to him in writing.  So as of now we still are not clear what the irregularities are that they were looking for.  We then told Moses to write a letter to his supervisor to let them or have her inform him in writing what they were doing.  He did and to this day he has not received a response.”

Sulph’s termination has raised the ire of union members, specifically those who are open vote workers.  While a course of action has not been clearly mapped out as yet, Willoughby-Sanchez says P.S.U. remains resolute on the matter.

Jackie Willoughby-Sanchez

“We are standing here because we are saying we have seen the trend by both governments. That whenever there is a major election, immediately thereafter, the number of open vote workers that go home because they don’t wave the proper flag or say the right slogan has been growing. What we are calling on government to do is to stop, stop. There is always going to be need for an open vote worker. What there won’t be need for is these extended amount of open vote workers; the political hirings and firings. We are calling for that to stop. Moreover, I need to aware Belize; that’s why as citizens we always need to learn to get up because the labor amendments that just passed, do you think the government was not being smart when they did not put termination with cause? They knew full well that this would have been one of the perfect cases to use it. Where was Belize? Why are we not getting up? Because it’s not affecting us personally?”

Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

According to organizers, they will be meeting to consider if they will be taking legal action.

The Young man is doing what we the Belizean people are afraid to do.This is thesame reason why the Gang members are terrorizing us.We as Belizeans are afraid to standup for what is right.Yet we try to victimize everyone that is trying to make a change.Change is not going to come to the Jewel until we change our way of thinking. No one care that this young man wasn’t a Belizean Citizen. All of a sudden it’s a big issue because they think they can use his status to intimidate him.So why was he even hired as a Public Servant knowing what his immigration Status was? This just shows how corrupted our system is.

Sulph deserves nothing…if you know him you will know he is not only a fake but a user… If he was fired for those reasons stated then too bad. Belizeans should not support someone so hypocritical to his cause. He is exactly what he claims the government is. Wake up belizeans!
