Lucilla Bartley charged for fatally stabbing Osborne Gordon

Lucilla Bartley

A forty year old woman, Lucilla Bartley, a single mother of two, is at the Central Prison tonight. She is among a small number of women to be charged with murder.  The only other woman charged recently, is Lavern Longsworth, also known as Antichrist, who is awaiting trial for the murder of her common-law-husband. Bartley is behind bars, accused in the stabbing at the corner of Cemetery Road and Curassow Street just after midnight on Easter Sunday.  The weekend’s only murder victim was fifty year old Osborne Gordon, a resident of Central American Boulevard. He is said to have gone in search of an open store to purchase alcohol when he encountered Bartley. It is not known if he had any relationship with Bartley, but it is reported that he was embroiled in a heated argument with her prior to receiving the fatal injury.  While a motive remains uncertain Belize City police were called to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital at around one thirty in the morning where they observed the lifeless body of the well-known bicycle repairman. He had a deep stab wound to the left upper chest.  According to Gordon’s sibling, the gash could not have been inflicted with a small blade.

“The only thing I could say mein like the thing weh stab ahn dah noh wah knife.  Da something sharp and round like the size of this hole is right.  So then when dehn di say da wah knife I think da piece ah steel, da something like that right.  Dehn ram ahn eena ih back and then dehn come from behind ih head and shub it down eena ih heart right.  Just cause I heard like he and wah girl mi have wahn confusion out deh right and then dis girl di ask fi help and then dehn say di girl mi have the knife and then di girl stab him right.”

“So you weren’t told either what his purpose for being out there early that morning would have been?”

“Yeah they said something like this they had a guy which was here right [and] he said twelve or one o’clock right they were here sitting right and he said “I’m going to buy a beer,” right but I don’t know where in Belize City beer sell [at that hour] right and this guy who was there with us he had a little bit of white rum and water eena wah thing, shake up right.  So that’s what it was that shocked him, he was here boozing right. Soon eena di morning ’bout one, two deh come fih me right da my house.  Dehn tell we well em dehn gah yo bredda da dead house come identify ah right.  So I gaan ova yonder right and dehn that da weh I find right, he een deh, yoh sih.”

Lucilla ‘Chilla’ Bartley, a domestic of Oleander Street appeared before Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb McKenzie in court today represented by attorney Arthur Saldivar.  The mother of two was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May twenty-fourth when she is scheduled to reappear in court.

There is a saying that the only thing open at that hour are legs. Hopefully she was protecting herself & if that’s the case, as the truth comes out she will be able to go back home to her children. I have to wonder though, as volatile as Belize why anyone especially a woman of sound mind would be out on the streets at that hour.

  2. Gustav says:

If she is convicted, she should hang, just like any man who murders should hang.

I really don’t know why Lucilla killed Gordon, But
She looks like a crack head to me, plain and simple. And it can also mean that Gordon got what he deserved that night, just like Lavern Longsworth no good ex (SELF-DEFENCE).

Two kids and out late at night walking around with a knife. She is the only bread-winner after all, so who are we to judge Lucilla.

Sad story but probably just another battered woman defending herself. People are tired and fed up and won’t take it no more.if that’s not the situation then i hope she can live with herself for taking someone else’s life innocently.

Is this all we can think about as Belizeans?Violence against our own people.

Same thing over and again. Who knows what really happen on the streets at night. Maybe he chance she, maybe she chance he. Pride will get you dead in Belize City. If I stopped to argue every time I was disrespected I would probably not be here today. HUMBLE is the word of the day. Stay sober and go to sleep at night! Then you get to wake up tomorrow! It is the same in every American City I have lived in. People are basically the same everywhere. Arguing over drugs, money, sex, alcohol, and other late night sins will get you killed. As simple as that. Such a shame. But this is the world. Always has been, always will be.
