Belize Sugar Industries going full steam ahead
It took six weeks of repairs, testing and more repairs but the Belize Sugar Industries factory at Tower Hill is once again operating at full capacity. The cane farmers in the north as well as their drivers and cutters have been struggling to make ends meet since the factory had to be closed in February when both turbines powering the BELCOGEN plant malfunctioned. The factory reopened on March fifth with one repaired turbine and after extensive work, the other was returned from Guatemala on April fourteenth. BSI has announced that the mill is now operating full steam ahead, but the farmers still need to keep their fingers crossed since the delays will extend the crop into the rainy season and will bring additional stressors on their production target.
