México to invest $2 Billion to secure Belize and Guatemala borders
A state of emergency has been declared, travel advisories have been issued and regional beach volleyball championships have been postponed since the massacre in La Libertad, Petén over the weekend. We have been following the story because of the close proximity of Petén to western Belize and possible risks to locals travelling across the border by road. But the province also shares a border with Mexico, which today announced that it is investing two billion dollars to improve its security infrastructure and technology at its borders with both Belize and Guatemala. The upgrades are intended to keep illegal immigrants, goods, drugs and weapons from being smuggled into Mexico. The Interior Minister, José Francisco Blake Mora, says that the Mexican government will collaborate with Guatemala in the fight against criminal gangs as well as to find the persons responsible for the recent murder of twenty-eight persons at Los Cocos farm in Petén.
JUST 1 billion dollars ……….COULD GO A LONG WAY IN ALLEVIATING POVERTY…..MDG no. 1!!!
WOW!!!!,2 billion dollars!,to secure borders?what happened, they finally run out all of the illegal criminals and don want them back? kinda like what goes around comes around!
This will do nothing because it’s not the border itself that is corrupt it’s the mexican people who are corrupt and not only them everyone else belizeans guatemalans etc . And most of all the governments are corrupt and none more so than this administration in Belize.
if it is sssssssssssoooooooooo corrupt then move to Guatemala or Mexico. Thank you!!!!!!
So this upgrade is suppose to only benefit Mexico. What about the drugs, goods, ammunitions and illegal immigrants that are smuggled into the Jewel.
concerned citizen we do not move because of corruption we get rid of corruption
Like what our former Prime Minister Said Musa would say “Billion with a ‘B'” lol
well, its a good idea , thats if the udp administration no packet sum..
Its very sad to know that innoccent people were murdered in such a brutal manner, things in Peten at this moment are not as bad as the media posts on their sites. This farm is about 80kms from Flores itself and at this precise moment its even more safe to travel since army and police troops are on the majory highways to secure the saftey of both locals and visitors to the country.
