Conventional wisdom says U.D.P.’s Hulse and P.U.P.’s Garcia win race

Supporters of the two major political parties voted over the weekend to elect standard bearers for the next general elections.  Three names were on the ballot for the United Democratic Party’s Stann Creek West constituency but when the votes were tallied Minister of Transport and NEMO, Melvin Hulse, was re-elected. Hulse garnered one thousand one hundred and seven votes while CPBL board member Denzil Jenkins received six hundred and forty-five. The third contender, Dennis Martinez got forty-eight votes. Meanwhile, in Belize Rural Central, the turnout for the convention was the largest with voting in both Ladyville and Hattieville. Attorney Dolores Balderamos Garcia was the winning People’s United Party Candidate with six hundred and forty votes. Garcia beat three challengers; Linsford Castillo received five hundred and seventy-six votes, Alburn Rivero got four hundred and forty-six while Edgar Young garnered three hundred and one.

The P.U.P. also held a joint endorsement convention on Saturday evening at Saint Mary’s Hall. Henry Charles Usher administered the oath swearing in five Standard Bearers; Cordel Hyde for Lake Independence, Mark Espat for Albert, Said Musa for Fort George, Anthony Sylvester for Queen Square and Attorney Philip Palacio for Mesopotamia.

“I do solemnly swear that I pledge to work for the achievement of the aims and objectives of the peaceful constructive Belizean evolution; to work for the principles, policies and programs of the People’s United Party; to abide by the constitution, discipline and decisions of the People’s United Party; to vote and encourage others to vote for all candidates of the People’s United Party in all elections and not to be a member or supporter of any other political party or organization which principles, policies and programs or inconsistent with those of the People’s United Party, so help me God. A round of applause for our new standard bearers…”

This Sunday, the P.U.P. will be holding its final convention, an endorsement of Party Leader John Briceño in Orange Walk Central.

MONEY is all that is playing a role in these Conventions. The PUP will lose all those seats that they are Buying Conventions in. But maybe that is the plan. Leadership struggles continue.
