Steve Nembhard goes directly to jail
They belong to the same party, that’s the People’s United Party and both can possibly be described as high profile soldiers. But there’s bad blood between Winston Smiling and Steve Nembhard over thousands of dollars that Nembhard reportedly owes Smiling. Despite promises to pay, Nembhard had not and so Smiling went to court. But Nembhard still didn’t pay up so he spent Monday night behind bars. Today he paid three thousand dollars towards the debt and was released from jail. From what we gather tonight, Nembhard is safely at home, but is it the end of the matter? We’ll find out sooner rather than later.

Lenders need to beware — “Neither a borrower nor a lender be.”
But Belize should not have a debtor’s prison. That’s not much removed from slavery.
If we had a prison for debtor’s then all Belize would be in that prison. The way government is borrowing and not paying we will soon be owned by another country.
So the money that was used to pay part of Nemhard’s debt was also used to bail him out of jail. How does that work can someone please explain.
John Eskisofrencio, maybe if Belize is owned by another country things are going to get better.
If Nembhard had borrowed from a lending institution like a bank or credit union etc. there are rules, conditions and procedures to follow and they will hold you accountable but borrowing from an individual is different especially if there was a verbal agreement to pay at a certain time. People cannot go on owing an individual for years and expect everything to be ok. Mr. Smiling put his trust in Nembhard that he will pay him back which didn’t happen. Smiling did they right thing in taking him to court because he probably saw that he was not going to get paid. An individual shouldn’t be lending money period because it always end up in a dispute. The people you trust always seems to be the ones who are the most difficult to collect from.
