Telephone love? Ministry of Works spends over $300,000 on calls
There’s a lot of talking going on at the Ministry of Works… so much so that the Ministry’s telephone bill will make you grasp for some air. We came across some rather interesting information from the last budget. MOW had an approved budget for an actual expenditure of two hundred and ninety-three thousand, seven hundred and seven dollars for fiscal year 2009-2010 for telephone. But according to the budget figures, the Ministry exceeded that expenditure and instead spent three hundred and sixty thousand dollars. Compare that to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which spent one hundred and twenty-two thousand dollars, the office of the Prime Minister which spent one hundred thousand and the ministry of police which spent fifty-two thousand. So if you do the math, that breaks down to approximately one thousand dollars daily in telephone calls made at the Ministry of Works. …. We are checking the change!
Its a shame to see a blatant waste of our hard earned tax dollars by GOB and their dont give a damn attitude ministries….imagine $300,000 a year for jus phone calls by one ministry…i think that kind amoney can be put to wayy better use…
Good news piece ! this is typical GOB. The government declares austerity but the CEOs wthe ministers’ blessing (yes) continue to treat staff to luxury, day trips, and perks. Apparently austerity is not shouted loud enough.
Might that possibly have to do with keeping in constant contact with people during emergencies? Especially cell phone calls?
We can have different hypothesis here (Sarcastically). Maybe the PM is not working enough, the Police are all sleeping while MOW are working 24/7. Or maybe the MOW are just wasting our money to make private calls anyways we can make all theses assumption. In any case something is wrong there. And if in reality they are using that much for work maybe they ought to find other means for cheaper communication.
its not the ministry of works that pays for the bill its us the Belizean people with OUR TAX $$$$$$$$,that is really too much……..and calling for what? to get our streets fixed ? our streets are in a messsssssss noting is being done to fix our streets all across this country…
MADA FISH BUAY….whats wrong with this Ministry (MOW), Did our PM questioned how did that occur? Now i can see why the other Ministries (Departments) had their phone lines changed to Pre=paid, because GOB needed to canceled quarter Million $$$$$$ for one Ministry and sacrificing the others, especially the Police Department, which is getting the shitty end of the stick because of someone else mismanagement and carelessness in how to run an office (Ministry)…we can’t say the pipe was broken somewhere underground….if that is the phone bill, i wonder if GOB money is not missing as well????…

The Government of Belize needs to allow Skype in Belize. FREE phone calls computer to computer anywhere in Belize and the world. Every Government office and home should have their Skype ready to accept calls and Millions will be saved. Free Skype Now!
They neeed to implement a system ( it exists) where call are tracked and lenght of time is recorded. All personal calls should be paid for by persons originating the call. Also why are taxpayers money used to pay people who are obviously not working but engaged in talk?
outrageous ththat money could have been used to build a childrens home or something………….or even extra scholarships….Dammmm! your out here working hard for minimum wage and things like this jus messes with your mind, to knw that these governmental officials are living it up so big. $300,000 on a telephone bill.

Well when you have a minister like Booths Martinez as head of MOW & area rep for Port Layola with a slogan saying “From Roots To Fruits, Only For Booths”, what did you all expected???
this UDP goverment say no money no they, they can’t fix Belama Police station yet, no police to keep in the station for 24 hrs, have you ever heard of a police staion with regular office hours,in Belize that is 9-4.. but they can spend $300,000.00 on phone calls. man Boots granny must be turning over in her grave!!!!

what do these ……… waste time on…i can afford more talk time on my phone and i just cant talk that much…what do they got to talk so much about/ im sure pm has already jumped on boots for this…its just a damn shame..constitutions and laws should be changed to improve governance not vicitimize people…when will laws be drafted to have ministers only able to run if they have a certain degree of qualifications, proven leadership and experience? jeez
Just give me back my income tax money mek I could pay my $25.00 phone bill. These ministers don’t know how to tighten their belts because it’s not their pockets feeling the pinch…it’s OURS!!!
