Senator Henry Gordon gives his concerns to the 9th

Henry Gordon

In addition to Minister Elrington and the Bar Association, Senator Henry Gordon, who represents the Council of Churches, also spoke about the Proposed Ninth on Open Your Eyes. Gordon said that because of government’s super majority in the House, even if the Senate is granted a thirteenth senator, the ninth amendment would still allow parliamentary powers to rule.

Senator Henry Gordon, Representative, Council of Churches

“In the constitution with respect to the legislature, you need three quarters majority to make a change like that. When you put it into the Senate, all you need is a simple majority. Now you need a simple majority because the way the Senate is structured is a simple majority for the administration. So you can’t lose. Now, unless you modify that Senate responsibility to make it two-thirds or three quarters to match what happens in the House, it’s a free ballgame.”

Marleni Cuellar

“Then that means that some of the Senators, like yourself who are not aligned, would then have to be a part of the decision making. Now Senator Gordon, we can’t move away from that point without talking about the thirteenth senator as well. Do you think that would change the landscape at all even if there was the incorporation of the simple majority?”

Senator Henry Gordon

“The thirteenth senator is an interesting phenomenon. It was approved by the National Assembly, the prime minister made a decision and I think the prime minister in my view—[I’m] not a lawyer, just a parliamentarian—did something in error. Now that decision is now in the courts; it could languish in the court for quite a while so the thirteenth senator would not come onboard. But even if the thirteenth senator did come onboard, it would not impact the power of the senate. Structurally, everything remains. The Senate can delay bills, the Senate can talk about bills but the House can override any decision made by the Senate.”

The two groups are waste of time. The common belizean don’t have any idea what the Ninth tenth eleventh ammendment is all about. 75% of ordinary belizean don’t have a clue whats all the fuss and fight ting about. Go check. The ordinary Belizean right now is more concern about the high price of gasoline and the price the have to pay for a pound of sugar and a pack of bread and soon the high price for corn tortilla. The basic things. The bad street we are driving on. We the ordinary belizeans are tired of seeing the high paid attorneys on the news sayin a lot of BS which we don’t understand. All of them are singing for there supper. Audrey Matura aurthur saldivar and all the others that are speaking out have there own agenda. we have so many attorneys in this country and only a few speaks out. The march tomorrow will be flap. People get enough of COLA(kremandala organization) and Shakron(aspiring mayor PUP

Rod, are you been sarcastic about sending the Belize politicians to Venezuela and Cuba? if you are serious, then you will be bighting the hands tha feed Belize, since Venezuela and Cuba are very generous to Belize. The leaders of these two nations really fights for their countries and in the process they have been unselfish.
