Still on the 9th, ‘Sedi’ Elrington says the Bar Association just woken from a deep slumber
The Bar Association’s rejection of the proposed eighth and ninth amendments to the constitution has not gone without some criticism. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington who is also an attorney, says the bar has been silent on many issues, and though he hadn’t read the Bar’s position on those amendments, Elrington says that it seems as if the association recently woke up from a deep slumber.
Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington, Foreign Minister
“I have not read it and not seen it, but I am very, very pleased really that the bar has waken up and are in fact taking an interest in what’s happening in the society. When last you seen or heard from the bar in terms of issues that are affecting the country? What position have you heard from the bar in terms of how we need to handle the crime situation? How do we need to make our society safe? When have you heard the bar come forward and make such a position? When have you heard them come and speak in terms of what is going on with the justice system? I got in trouble with them very recently when I complained bitterly about the tardiness and the kind of appointments that were made to the judiciary and things like that and some of them came out. But they did not come up with any solution. People died before they get their cases heard. Criminals are waking down the steps every day. We know they commit the offences, but witnesses are intimidated, witnesses are killed before the cases are heard. We have not heard a word from the bar association as to how we deal with those situations. Would it not be nice for them to be dealing with those issues? Because I would tell you; nobody in my constituency has raised this issue with me—this thing about the ninth amendment; not a single person and I am in my division every day. But people raise the issue of crime with me. As a matter of fact, I am tired of going to funerals. I would like to hear something from the bar as to how we handle this issue; what they are proposing. But they are strangely silent and have always been silent. That is the difficulty that I have with the bar association. It is not a new position I’ve taken. I stopped attending bar association meeting years now. I was not at all happy with their performance. But I now welcome the fact that they seem to be waking from a very deep slumber and I am hoping now that they will seek to see how they can expedite trials, how they can seek to introduce continuous education for attorneys who are practicing at the bar for judges and the like—because these are the things I think that they should be looking at.”
Elrington said that the issues that the bar should be examining include how to be more efficient as an association and how to control crime in the country. The rejections to the proposed amendments, in his view, are mere distractions.
Well said, Sedi. Absolutely no pun intended !
I believe, without a doubt, that Counselor Sedi is an INTELLIGENT MAN indeed. You see, only a very intelligent person would say that kind of STUPIDITY such as: OUR BORDERS ARE ARTIFICIAL. On the matter of the 9th amendment he said: I BELIEVE THAT IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT. Certainly that is what he and Barrow want to ramp down our throats. While we the Independent are in favour of NATIONALIZATION we dislike the govt. putting its’ actions beyond the scrutiny of a court of law. I wonder if Mr. Barrow is now claiming to be the POPE. The pope claims to be INFALLIBLE that is: He cannot make a mistake!. He is always right!. When he makes a ruling, no one can dispute it!. That is what Barrow is trying to do with this 9th amendment. I wonder if from now on we should address our noble P.M. as: HIS HOLINESS POPE BARROW.
Lucas, why don’t you just shut up. Sedi’s point that our borders are artificial was said in a particular context. And the Pope has never claimed to be infallible. Get yourself an education before you run your mouth.
What is this about the Bar handling the crimes in Belize? How about the entire governmental bodies, including the PM coming together, set some rules and follow through. Of course, this should be done after rigorous police retraining.
Sedi is the one who has just awoken from a deep slumber!! ANd the thing of it of it is, he is still not fully awake because he di talk lone !@@$!!!! GO back to sleep Sedi because Barrow got you di look schupid!!
Sedi wants to be in the news! Sedi just remembered that he should make his contribution in the social issues/affairs of Belize. Sedi doesn’t want to be outshone by his brother! That’s good
Hon. Sedi, but tell us what you mean when the Bar Assoc.’s “rejection of the amendments are mere distractions.” We need to know! Is a hidden agenda that can be detrimental to Bzeans?
Hi KarmaCatchesCharmaleon; What is an education for you? A Primary Certicate?, A High School or a Sixth Form Diploma?, An Associate Ed.?, An Undergraduate Education e.g. B.A.? or a Graduate Degree like a Masters or PHD.?. People who consider themselves intelligent especially, lawyers, invent words to confuse the MASSES. I heard This man explanation of the context but that does not mean he is correct. OUR BORDERS ARE NOT ARTIFICIAL JUST AS HIS BEARD IS NOT. In regards to the INFALLIBILITY of the pope, I mentioned it to clarify what followed in regards to Mr. Barrow. However, if you have questions in regards to the doctrine of the infallibility of the pope, check for yourself: THE CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA, vol.7 art. INFALLIBILITY or, THE FAITH OF OUR FATHERS by James Cardinal Gibbons, 110th ed. 1917. Or DOGMATIC DECREES OF THE VATICAN COUNCIL 1870-71, pgs234-271.
SEDI……..Mr. SEDI………excuse me but …..
THE BAR ASSOCIATION IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REDUCING CRIME IN THE COUNTRY……
I believe THAT IS THE GOVERNMENTS JOB………
SEE THAT THEY DO IT!!!!!!!!!
