Awe and Vega crash; Awe dies on impact

An accident on the outskirts of Orange Walk District still has two families reeling from the tragic outcome. On Friday at about seven p.m., forty one year old Amir Awe was driving a white Jeep Liberty towards Corozal. His passenger was well known businessman, fifty-three year old German Vega Senior, the brother of the Deputy Prime Minister. Awe lost control of the vehicle and it flipped several times in a straight area of the highway. Awe was propelled through the windshield and he died on the spot.  Vega sustained head and body injuries. He was initially taken to the Northern Regional Hospital and eventually transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Vega was released from the KHMH this morning while Awe’s funeral was held this afternoon. The vehicle was promptly removed from the scene.  According to Police Press Officer Sergeant Fitzroy Yearwood, the accident occurred between miles sixty and sixty one.

“Police of course responded to a scene between miles sixty-one and sixty-two on the Northern Highway where they saw Amir Awe and Mr. German Vega, businessmen both of Orange Walk, who were in a vehicle that overturned. Awe was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Mr. Vega was initially treated in Orange Walk at the Northern Regional and later transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial in a very serious condition.”
