Double jeopardy not in effect for bulletproof vest charge

UB Councilor and Lecturer, twenty-eight year old Leon Leslie was once again picked up from his home and charged for keeping prohibited material. It all stems back to January sixteenth when police claimed they found a bulletproof vest in his vehicle. On July twentieth, the arresting officer failed to show up to testify and Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer dismissed the charges against Leslie. But early this morning, acting on directives from the off of the DPP, the matter was brought back and Leslie was rearrested and charged with the same offense. This time he appeared before Magistrate Dorothy Flowers in the presence of his attorney, Ellis Arnold. Magistrate Flowers became concerned and asked about the length of time that has passed since the incident occurred. Arnold told the judge that he will be looking into that aspect of the charge among other issues that he intends to address in court at the next session. Leslie was given bail in the sum of two thousand dollars plus one surety of the same amount. When we spoke with Arnold outside the courtroom this morning he said that he was not given a reason as to why his client was rearrested on the same charge. The case was adjourned until August twenty-fifth.
Again these idiotic laws in Belize, I think that every law abiding citizen should be able to wear a bullet proof vest if it makes them feel safe but I guess this government does not want it’s people to feel safe that is why they allow rampant murders to occur in the streets so they can scare the people and do as they please in office without any opposition. The present climate in Belize as it relates to crime calls for not only a bulletproof vest but also a bulletproof house.Why even arrest this man?Maybe he should have also been travelling in a bulletproof vehicle.

Here we go again with this draconian system! Mr Leslie is a Educated individual who is contributing to a better Belize. He is currently employed at a university yet the corrupt system is going to extra lengths to prosecute him like he is one of those numbskulls on the street. The way Belize is going these days we need vests to protect our lives. Every week cases are thrown out murders roberries etc. If Mr Leslie is found guilty, its vivid that our police and gov’t are not on the sides of hard working citizens.

They probably frustrating him so he leaves Belize for good. Will just add to the brain drain in Belize….he was my lecturer in UB and all I can say is that he is a good man who someone is trying to screw. Really sad!
@2cents The man has a bullet proof vest in order to try and protect himself in those savage streets in Belize in which the government has failed to protect it’s law abiding citizens and has continuously release these savages back into the community, the defense of one’s life should be a basic right, a bullet proof vest is not a cheap item that the average person can purchase but by all means if you can afford one I say you should have the right to do so in such a violent community but I imagine that you should already know this. the dumbest part of that bulletproof vest law is that you can get more time in jail for it cause its “prohobited” than you would get for an unlicensed fully loaded 9mm pistol because it’s only “illegal”
Dumb politicians with dumb laws
Leon can have a successful and well paying career in the United States, however, he choose to be in Belize because he is not driven by the need for money. He truly enjoys being a Belizean, and unlike most Belizeans educated in the U.S., he wanted to return home and help make Belize a better place. It’s unfortunate that he has to endure all this bad press because he is no way involved in any illegal activity, and don’t have to for any financial or egoistic gains.
REALLY? REALLY?!! REALLY?!!!! THIS IS WHAT WE ARE WASTING OUR TIME ON? NOW YOU ARE GETTING LOCKED UP TO TRY AND PROTECT YOUR VERY LIFE. YOU CAN BARELY GET A FIREARM LICENSE AS A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, NOW YOU CAN’T PROTECT YOURSELF FROM A STRAY BULLET.
