Lack of evidence for 2 persons accused of murder
Two men, who have spent a year in prison awaiting trial for murder, were freed of the charge today but tonight they are still behind bars. Twenty-one year olds Akeem Humes and Ryan Alvarez got the news this morning when the Prosecutor, Sergeant Carol Tucker, announced that the charges are being withdrawn. But the Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb McKenzie needs the directive in writing before she could free them.
Since the charges are being dropped due of a lack of evidence, the Chief Magistrate had asked for the formal withdrawal to be presented by this afternoon to avoid sending Humes and Alvarez back to prison. Up to late this afternoon, it hadn’t happened and both men were further remanded. Humes and Alvarez were charged following the murder of Jason Michael Flores, who was gunned down in December 2009 on his way to work. Police first arrested Alvarez in April of 2010 and Humes was picked up five months later in September.
