Mike Menjivar to stand trial for attempted murder of 6 GSU officers

mike menjivar

Another prominent businessman’s personal trials are being played out in the court. Earlier today in the Belmopan Magistrates Court, Mike Menjivar was committed to stand trial in the next session of the Supreme Court. The thirty-four year old businessman, known best as the owner of La Cabana Bar, will be tried on six out of an initial nine counts of Attempted Murder and Aggravated Assault as well as a single count of Damage to Property. The ruling was handed down this morning by Magistrate Adolph Lucas Junior, who found that there is sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against him.  Menjivar was charged following a shootout with officers of the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU), during a raid at his property on May twentieth. The cops named in the case are Santiago Gongora, Kent Aranda, Elmer Nah, Adrian Lopez, Delwin Casimiro and a sixth officer, known only as Galvez. Charges in relation to three other officers were dismissed. Menjivar’s attorney, Arthur Saldivar, has indicated that he will appeal the committal at the Supreme Court. Saldivar also contends that there is a conflict of interest on the part of Director Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lynn Vidal, whose husband, Marco Vidal, the head of the GSU, is a potential witness in the case. Menjivar was released on bail of twenty-five thousand dollars shortly after one o’clock this afternoon. One of the conditions of bail is that Menjivar surrenders his travel documents and he will only be allowed to travel for medical purposes since he still being treated for injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident last October.

This case is a big joke while the police officers who were involved in the drug bust of the Colombian plane were all let go knowing that they were involved in this drug operation and then all the people involved in the Chinese scandal at the airport were all let go no one going to jail for any of these crimes because all of these people were black here you have a guy who is innocent and just because he is Spanish he is facing all these lies and charges yet not one person at the airport or any of the police officers who are black are even being charged this is how prejudice this pm and gov. Are if I were you mike I would sue this pm and gov. For being a bigot and prejudice this pm has said he hates all Spanish people and he thinks they are all stupid including the Maya people sue him sue this useless gov.

lawyers will try to find any excuse to get a criminal out of the charges. We need to start having these lawyers accountable to the people. This particular lawyer is slated to run in General Elections. Dude, you need to show your love for your country from now. If you are defending criminals now, what would happen should you ever win the elections? More corruption within your party?

Bzn2dabone, how can you judge that this man is a criminal? seems you are quick to judge and convict. Hope when GSU visit your house and family, you feel what this man has been through innocently.

I hope you realize that you and all tax payers, including myself will have to help pay for the damages caused upon the conclusion of this case….we will have to pay the consequences of decisions taken by GSU leader (who is trying to please his master) and is simply a puppet on the string being manipulated by politicians to harass hard working Belizeans.

First I would like to say shame on the police and the G.S.U for trying to make a big deal out of something that is clearly their fault. They are now trying their best to burn this guy for something that they caused to have happened. Why couldn’t they wait for day break to go and do their search if they positive that he was guilty of something? I am sorry Rod if I offend you ,but I do not think that the P.M. is a bigot but just a little misguided when it comes to these things. I do believe that lately the police are the ones going around looking for trouble, harassing people, framing people and beating people up for no reason at all which is very wrong. The government of Belize needs to get a grip of all wrong doings that is going on in the country. Sooner or later Belize won’t be safe not even from those who are suppose to protect and serve. If they won’t uphold the law then who will? It will be a perfect excuse for people to go around and kill each other which will be a darn shame. In my eyes I would kill those who commit a crime and ask questions later because this is getting out of hand. Shame on the commissioner of police, the minister of police and the GOV.

First things first the GSU stands for GANG SUPPRESSION UNIT, what on earth were they looking for in Belmopan. There is the Dragon Unit, and The ADU that are more than capable to do this job. Could it just be that Mr. Vidal is the enforcer for this government. This is a plain case of police brutality and abuse of power. and BZN2dabone what do you care you live in the states to hell with those who live here right? this is just a shame and disgusting act by the police…

  7. islander says:

FUNNY how the GSU was all ganghu infront of Channel 7, but when a little test of minimal gunfire from a lowly 9mm came their way they started shooting like chickens with their heads cut off.

Seriously though, WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE G.S.U. is engaged with weapons like an AR-15, M-4 OR AK-47 by trained Kaibil like whats happening to the Mexican Police? Will the GSU rise to the occasion or default to their obviously mediocre training?
