Police say grenade threat to public is the reason for GSU incident

Following the weekend’s violence, the police claim today that the gangs have grenades that they plan to use over the September celebrations. On Friday night, the Gang Suppression Unit zeroed in on George Street at a house where neighbours gathered after attending the funeral of Charles Woodeye. It is estimated that over forty persons were detained after a violent clash between GSU officers, members of the George Street Gang and others unaffiliated with any street violence. Many innocent bystanders got caught up in the search of the area which the Ministry of Police today says was a routine search for guns and grenades. One bystander is Zane Galvez whose family owns Royal Wholesale. Galvez and a friend were delivering a case of Heineken beer to the family on George Street. He says he walked into the house, handed over the liquor, collected his payment and gave his condolences. After that the GSU trucks drove up and tasers and guns that shoot rubber bullets were pulled out. Galvez’s arm was broken in three areas even as he pleaded with the GSU not to hurt him.

Zane Galvez

Zane Galvez, Beaten by GSU

“As you hear the doors open you hear gunshots gone off—like multiple gunshots. People end up getting shot with rubber bullets. So I stormed back into the house and I get low cause I never know weh di happen—I was very confused about the whole situation. I see people getting tasered, people di get pepper-sprayed and it was mostly women and kids—that’s outside. We were in the house and after they stormed in the house, they start broke up everything, continue taser people, di lash people with clubs. I jumped on the ground because I neva wahn seem like I mi di resist or di put up wah struggle ina any way. So I deh pan my back on the ground both hands in the air and I di tell the officers I noh know weh di happen, I noh deh ina it. Please just let me leave cause I just come deliver a case of Heineken. And he just stand up over me for a couple seconds the watch me pan di ground and I noh know weh mi di run through ih mind but he still swing a baseball bat at my head and I had to put my hand ina di way to block the blow. That dah how I end up get the injuries to my elbow. I believe dah mi almost forty guys get picked up and outta all of them, only two guys get charged—one for obscene language and one for throwing missile. And you could believe that that charges get put pan them after they get detained because after you get detained you wahn di cuss and your frustrated and whatnot. So they neva had no charge fi anybody; nobody neva wanted so I noh understand why they had to come ina this manner of brute force and ignorance.”

Elsworth Wade

Elsworth Wade, Shot with GSU Rubber Bullet

“I di wait fi Zane after he drop off Heineken in the yard. Id eh outside ina di vehicle di wait. About three, four truck brakes up after about a minute or two waiting for Zane in the vehicle with lone masked man. Jump rush the yard, wah ruckion start ina di yard. Wah two ah dehn spot me ina di vehicle and freeze me tell me step out with my hands up. Ask I walk out, somebody just shot me ina my back with wa rubber bullet. I drop pan my knees then wah next two start shock me up, start whap me up, noh even give me no chance fi try explain nothing or ask why this di happen. Drag me, stone all ah we ina di vehicle pan top ah one another. After still come around and pepper-spray everybody in the vehicle. Ker we dah di station after that, dreg we outta again; di beat we fi jump outta di vehicle as we reach dah station. Meanwhile we di walk dah back after dehn done take we offa di ground where they done put we on the ground outta di vehicle, spot wah man weh know we, Mister Caliz, we say Mister Caliz you know we, you know we dah people like this. Dehn yah time yah ih still got on his mask but I done know ih lone walking. So after that the man haul off ih mask in front of everybody—everybody see da Mister Caliz that. He started talkignt hat people go on like unu dah bad man, but dah dehn da bad man. All kinda thing like that and I noh really know. They just lock we down after that; ruff we up bad fi wah lee search. Simple thing weh dehn could just tell we open fi we leg, dehn di kick yo, just di really brutalize yo dehn kinda way di.  And on top of that, lock we down dah station, me personally lock me down from Friday night like bout seven o’clock and released Monday morning bout after nine o’clock—past my forty-eight hours—without seeing a doctor til mussi bout Sunday night.”

Zane Galvez

“I just left from my lawyer and we di have legal action. I di try see how I could pursue it for some criminal charges against them because I believe this is attempt murder because my doctor said that if he had hit me in the head, I would probably not be here right now talking to you.”

Galvez says his medical bills after his first surgery this coming Friday will reach to a little less than seven thousand dollars. Government officials have so far declined an interview on the actions of the GSU, but the Ministry of Police sent out a press release today explaining the Police Department’s tough stance against acts of violence over the weekend.  The release says that during the search, police came under assault; a police vehicle was damaged and the police station on West and Dean Streets was targeted.  Offenders also threw a Molotov cocktail (home-made explosive) at the police station. According to the Police, they also have evidence that, while in lock-down, gang members instructed other members to target Chinese grocers and other innocent Belizeans with a shooting spree to send a message of retaliation for their detention.

First, through what channel did the arrested gang members communicated with the outside world?. I understand that lock-down individuals keep cellular phone. If this is the case, it should immediately be prohibited. visits should be in rooms with listening divises and phone calls should only be allowed by call-collect phones installed in the visiting area of the jail and prison and should be bug. This is standard practise in jails and prisons in the U.S. If they want to declare war on govt. and the security forces, so be it but, if they start attacking innocent civilians then they are terrorist and govt. should not negociate with terrorist but hunt and eliminate them as dogs with rabies. While I did not condone the way the raid was carried at Mr. Saldiver’s place, I feel no compassion for bastards. WASTE THEM.

  2. BZNinCALI says:

For the innocent bystanders injured by the GSU, you are owed an apology. Let’s get real, this community has been cowed into silence & a city lives in fear because of a few treacherous souls. Our people cannot walk the streets during the day or at night or celebrate this milestone in our history because we took too long to try to reign in this terror.

  3. good fuh unnu says:

Of all the people i don’t feel sorry for is Elsworth Wade.He is one of the biggest thieves and jack man that is walking around Belize. This dude will steal the sugar out from a bun.I swear i’m not lying. They all up here crying like they innocent. i hope you all have scars to remind you of what they did to you.Chancey no good dogs. Now tek that. They need to quit using the word Gaza because they don’t know what the word means. Those people fight for a cause and you all have no sensible cause but to wipe out a country for only God knows what. You all killing out yourselves and leave your women behind for someone else to smoke out. Some other dude to raise your kids. You have no sense at all.Your parents should’ve raised pigs for they would receive bacon and pork chops. Can’t get nothing from you idiots. This is proof that condoms and abortion works.GSU’s should’ve finished the job and don’t leave it half done. All you’re here on earth for is to breathe in other people’s good air and blow out polluted air.Gwaan with unnu.

  4. Elgin Martinez says:

The PM needs to take serious actions against these idiots because now they’ve got the impression that everyone is afraid of them and that they can do as they please. This crime situation is what the politicians need to be debating.

  5. krtdiaz says:

This response is absolute nonsense as they feed into and try to maximize on mass hysteria. Finding a grenade or hunting for one has nothing to do with spraying pepper spray children, women and senior citizens. Belizeans know that the country is crime riddled and that crime needs to be controlled but this GSU is out of order and seemingly out of control.

This very unit will cause more issues on the streets and cause more killings..possible of police men themselves.

  6. Rod says:

This whole gov. And pm need to be locked up for stupidity ignorance treason and everyone who was hurt in this should sue the gov. And sue this pm personally for it is his stupidity that is causing this whole situation in the country sue barrow make him spend some of the millions he has stolen from the poor people of Belize.

  7. Old School says:

Luv ur point gud fi uno. Man they wa the threaten our lives on national tv. They wa ppl feel like they invincible. And poor thing galves. wa cry on tv. de no even give the man a lee napkin man. da sin lol. but for the rest of them good riddance. like they say every foul got they sunday noh. thats just the break of dawn for their a**. bring it on more gsu just for threatening us. de d ask fi more.

  8. Sugar says:

while I do not agree with the modus-operandi of the GSU, I have NO regards for, nor will I grieve for any member of the George st. crowd. murders and killings have always pointed to G. St. and now they want public sympathy?? Kiss my gramma ****

  9. Elgin Martinez says:

Dean Barrow is the is the one who gave these gang members the impression that they can do as they please.Do you all remember when he called a meeting with the gang member? That was his biggest mistake. Now they’re acting like everyone is suppose to be afraid of them.Wake up Belize and don’t allow these criminals to have you all living in fear.

  10. belizeanpride says:

over sucks because where’s the professional training that they seem to show. that’s not a good training but a senseless way to try curb the the crime. this will enrage the people more and more violence will erupt. Jeez how low class can our officials be. mein hopefully they are removed as the pup said in their promise. being trained as they say would have never end up like this. i don’t take part for the criminals but jeez kids are there also. these same kids will grow with remorse against the same gsu or police.

  11. defend BZ says:

This has gone beyond gans. This is plain snd simple Terriorism on the part of both the gans and the Gang Suppresion Unit.

  12. solution to the problem !! says:

To fix this problem with the gangs, and make Belize a safer place, just gather up all the known members take them ALL out to the same Caye. Have a helicopter fly over and drop off lots of weapons and amo. Come back in a week to clean up the mess.

  13. Victor says:

When law abiding citizen look at this assault it makes you wonder what will happen next. This assault does not in no way give the police unit the authority to behave the way it did, this will now cause the citizenry to keep away from police. This has now drawn one conclusion “FIRST BLOOD”

  14. Concern Citizen says:

Good fu dem they need some more…. when they are out their shooting innocent by standers and children. They got a dose of their own medicine. If you wah dish it yo have to know how to EAT it TOO. Great Job POLICE. Keep ift coming give them some more.

  15. Concern Citizen says:

good for them . if you want to make a dish you need to Eat it too. Great Job police. When these guys are out shooting their targets innocent by standers are caught in the fire e.g children women senoir citizens out of sight out if mind. Dont be crying now take whe yo get wha B1t$# Lick LMAOOOOOOOO

  16. PARADISE GONE says:

IF THE POLICE FORCE CANT CONTROL OFFICER NAH BEHAVIOUR ,THE STREETS WILL. ABUSE OF POWER DOES NOT DECREASE CRIME .IT ONLY ESCALATES MORE VIOLENCE.IF U KEEP HARRASSING A DOG IT WILL BITE U ON THE LONG RUN.AS BAD AS THEY TALK ABOUT MR CRISPIN JEFFRIES HE USE TO COME ALONE IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD AND ASK GANG MEMBERS BREDDA WHAT COULD WE DO TO CURBE THE VIOLENCE, BUT THESE NEW COPS R SO COWARD ALL THEY DO IS GET CRIME WORSE AND THEY HIDE ON THE WEEKENDS AND KEEP HANGING AROUND THE POLICE STATION BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THEY HAD OVER ACT ON DUTY.

  17. Gillett says:

This is a completely insane situation. I think the GSU is good for the country but at the same time they need to control their actions. If these kind of actions do continue by the GSU, it would result in even harsher retaliation by these gangs.
I understand what the GSU is trying to do but when innocent people get hurt, it creates more bad than good. The GSU need to correct their actions and do it quickly if they are to reduce gang violence.

  18. Marcus Canul says:

The GSU and the lame excuses given for their actions is the perfect thing to kill the Restore Belize Initiative. We are speedily heading to anarchy in this country – Thanks – No Thanks to the GSU.

  19. hard woking Belizean says:

The PM has given the GSU the wings to be above the law and that’s the exact behavior they have adapted to. Well, do not be surprised my fellow Belizeans because this is just the beginning! Wait until the Barrow shoves down our throats the 9th amendment he is so dying to put through, there will be no holds bar against the GSU or Barrow and his arrogant self or his dummies in the House of Reps. God have mercy on us all!!!!

  21. shabba says:

All these people are the problem. The entire George Street community encourage the behavior of these thugs. Also all these Galvez are known affiliates of this gang. Why you think they were shot up in the put – put incident.

  22. Get it rite!!!! says:

i think the gsu failed. These guys should have been taken over the reef and dumped there! We cannot allow any group of persons to hold the City or our community at ransome. How many innocent persons have died already? How many more needs to die before the Gob takes a stand?

None of these guys are productive citizens — they have been praying in the innocent for years. Thieves, drugdealers and murderers.

The sad thing is that some media houses and lawyers would jump to defend them —- letting them feel like they can do what ever they want to innocent people —– that is the sad part……

GSU keep it up. GOB create a death squad if necessary— get rid of them —make belize city a peaceful place — do what is necessary!!!!!!!

  23. Get it right says:

I applaud the GSU for taking a tough stance on these so called bad man. All of them crying on news are the same ones robbing, killing and hurting innocent people. They do these heartless acts without any benefits to them. I would really want to know what they get out of all the lawlessness bc at the end of the day they worse off than where they started. Bad man have two places that they will go, and thats jail and 6 feet under. As for Zane trying to come off as innocent, stop cry bc you pay them thugs so you can look like you bad. We all know what you and all your brothers and cousins do. So don’t play like you were innocently there delivering a case of beer. Play bad man then tek yuh lick like one and stop cry. Hope GSU does this more often

  24. Marcy says:

I have mixed feelings about this situation. The police have a job to do, but I strongly believe that they are taking advantage of their position in many cases. They need to remember that not everyone that lives on George Street (or near any gang hotspot) is a criminal. I believe that the manner in which they raided that house was unnecessary and that court action should be taken out on them to remind them that they too are not above the law.
On the otherhand, I have to agree that I am not sorry for most of those people involved in that raid. Yes there were many innocent whom I believe should not have been treated in that manner, however, for the majority, I have no remorse. When families are out here crying because of what they have done, they show no remorse for their actions. And now that they have now become the victims, they want us to feel sorry for them? The same things and worst they have done to others, consider it karma!

  25. Elgin Martinez says:

Why isn’t anyone on this forum writing about the threats that were directed to the Belizean Citizens by these gang members. Why are we so quick to defend these criminals who are intimidating and murdering Belizean citizens on a daily basis.

  26. Lionman says:

It seems like the police is trying to give them a taste of their own medicine but it’s not going to work. It will only create more violence. I appreciate what the police is trying to do or what they claim they are trying to do but gang suppression does not work. It will only create more violence. All the negativity in this country is affecting everyone. What we need is to direct more of our energy and resources into creating more positive experiences for all Belizeans. More positivity to drown out the negativity.

  27. NoNo says:

I believe there could have been a more proffesional way for the GSU to have done what they were told to do. Pepper spraying kids is a no no, yeah maybe the kids parents are involve in drugs or gang banging but regardless, they are still Kids and all the GSU did is screw up the mind of these kids they peper sprayed to had Police, therefore few years from now they will be old enough to hold a gun and gues what? they coming for the Police, and the say thing sometimes is, that its the Good Police Officers who get killed. So GSU’s prapare yourselfs for more deaths, thanks to your immature unpreffesional behaviours. When those kids grow up and start killing, you GSU’s are to blame, you made them have hate in thier hearts even more.

  28. T says:

Ok i feel sorry fu the delivery bally he just mi ina di wrong place as for the other guys I no know much bout it but if they di threaten police and the public and they wah act crazy…by allmeans officer arrest them rass n if u need fu get crazy u get crazy too…as long as da no nobody innocent.

  29. Elgin Martinez says:

Victor:What about all the assaults on innocent Citizens from these so called thugs?

  30. good fuh unnu says:

@ Victor, the policemen should not be friends with the public because only then will they think they can do what they want because they have a friend in the force.Yes,innocent kids and senior citizens were caught in the madness but thats how it is in war.Ask yourself this question, why would you even take a bunch of kids danccing on George Street when you know that its a hot commodity.I wouldn’t even walk pass that street if someone was paying me.Sometimes we weave our own web.Its not a matter of being scared but a matter of stay away from trouble. You have to love and protect you. Some people have no choice because they live around their but when you have kids and don’t want them to befall to that kinda life, you make choices and move away.Sell your house and relocate somewhere else.Belizeans have a huge problem with changes but i love my kids more than any house.i would move out so fast,i would leave skid marks behind.

  31. Do it right says:

Those of you that think GSU did something wrong are either in support of the violence that these killers are doing are just plain blinded by ignorance bc u are a PUP. These same ones crying on news are the some of the biggest criminals, including cry baby above, and we all know this. The GOB had tried talking with them and it didn’t work, now its time for action. They want to play bad man then don’t cry when you get dealt with in the same manner that you terrorize innocent hard working people. At the end of the day the state is more powerful than any street gang. This is a sign that the police and GOB are getting tired of their bullshit, and they will now get man handled. Y’all wanted GOB to take a tougher stance on crime and now they are doing it, so why complain and feel sorry for these criminals.

  32. Learsiman says:

They’re lucky they didn’t get their $@@ killed. They deserve it as they are the culprits for a lot of the crime in the city.

  33. mysticalman says:

These fellas only play innocent, by no means they are. Crime is getting way out of hand in this country and the government needs to put a stop to it! George street gang?! sounds like a joke. All deh jokey lee bwai weh the run bout the shoot people: hang them all. Like play big and bold but fraid fi dead. DEATH PENALTY SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED! only so this will stop or slow down to a crawl to say the least. No jail time, because the tax payers feel that pressure. Its time to rid belize of these DOGS.

  34. Al says:

I do not agree with unnecessary police brutality, but, the law has to get tough on the known criminals and if that means rounding them up and locking them away, go for it. The crinimals are now targeting law abiding citizens to kill so they can send a message, the people of Belieze must free themselves from these foul people. I applaud the gang unit, keep pressure on the scums who are ruining such a beautiful country.

  35. citizen says:

you cannot fight crime nicely…to fight these criminals you need to treat them with aggression. The police should department should have a list of people that they know are gang affiliated they should just take them down one by one with no remorse before the situation get worse.. some of these guys have records they are known killers… as for the bystanders i agree that the police department apologize and offer to cover medical bills caused by this incident.

  36. Belizean Girl says:

Everyone got thing fu seh, but no one can step up and do something about the crime and gang problem in Belize. The only ones that have the courage to stand up to these gang people are the GSU. Not even the regular police man want risk his life in these gang infested areas. So why complain and criticize? We Belizeans like complain and have no better thing to do but bring down the people who actually working at something. Everybody got mouth but nobody got courage. All you hear is complains, complain if police noh do nothing and complain if police do something….what uno want huh? Leave the police alone fu do deh job.

  37. bones says:

The G.S.U. should have gone in there with flame throwers and burn them all out. burn out george street ,men women and children, they are like a virus that should be destroyed, or they will destroy the society

  38. Concern citizen says:

To This guy Rod: You really have a lot of hatred for this pm. I keep tellng you who started all the corruption and crime problems in Belize, it was your beloved former premier “Musa” I noh hear you mention anything about him starting all a dis. I guess you were in on it, and now you can’t tek it the gravy train wreck. Fonseca and all the pup crooks are the ones who should be in jail they are the ones who committed treason and stole all the peoples money, you forget when his wife got caught at the airport trying to leave the country with all the money? How dumb are you.

  39. Bill says:

The GSU is doing what should have been done ages ago. War on the Gangs. Advice to gangs: If you think we will stand by and have you threatening the law abiding citizens of this jewels, you better think twice. We will use our licensed weapons if necessary to back up the GSU. Something most of us wanted to do long time ago. Apologies to innocent bystanders.

  40. ny says:

the gsu lacks professionalism, there is a right way and a wrong way to conduct any raid, and these officers botched this one big time. those who were wrongfully caught up in this sweep needs to sue the gob for police brutality, someone has to pay. its not like the police department don’t have a list of all the criminal elements throughout the city, so they should have known who to target. but once again they show how incompetent they are, and because they know they were wrong, they try to manufacture reasons to justify their ineptness.

  41. Belizean Girl says:

Oh please ny, you said the same thing yesterday. You only talk and talk, but you don’t walk the walk. Since when gang members remain a set of people, they get killed too by other gangsters, so they keep di recruit new members- who dah kids by the way and women. You see the street girls that were on the news yesterday? Them street gial dah the first fi throw wah paint pan your head if you try go arrest their man-gangsters. Some of these girls like 14 yrs. The gangsters are guilty not only of murder but also incest, sodomy, and all the sinful things you would not imagine. The other day two girls were arrested for hiding some serious ammunition for their “man”-mussy some gang buay. So how can you talk about something you know little about? Unless you know more about gangs in Belize than what you seem to be saying. No body manufacture anything, you just hurt cuz the real deal about gangs in Belize coming out in the open huh? Everybody vex when Ross Kemp did his documentary on gangs in Belize, but who di work on it? GSU mi bally! GSU dah the real deal now from police. So do ywhat you do best and let the professionals- GSU- do there thing.

  44. Joe says:

Sorry for the innocent. Great job GSU – Hey, why not do like in El Salvador or Honduras – get some respect from the gangs — in those countries it happened like this — hundreds of gang members were collected and put in jail — then one night the jail “caught fire” . No one could say how or why – but the country had less gang members.

  45. KUDOS GSU!!! says:

I like the GSU!!!! love them….Good for those stupid assess….unproductive animals….i agree…dont hurt the innocent in the process but protect them…kill those murderers and theives…. they deserve it 110%.If they did not have the GSU these guys would have been killing your daughters, son or other family members….get real Belize city members…you need the GSU or it would be a worse place…………IF YOU ARE INNOCENT AND NOT INVOLVED IN ANYTHING ILLEGAL , YOU HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR…..JUST COOPERATE AND YOU WONT GET HURT………………..COOPERATE AND ACT HUMBLE!!!

  46. Elgin Martinez says:

Drastic times calls for drastic measures. You can’t fight a so called gangsta carrying an AK-47 with a sling shot. What is happening in Belize is real.Anyone can become a statistic at any moment.Let’s stop supporting stupidity .

  47. Higher Level says:

The George Street Gangsters are Barrow’s peoples- they repeatedly stated on TV that they voted him into power. The GSU are Barrow’s police gang. So it is, that two of Barrow’s most feared, notorious and powerful gangs (both illegal) are fighting with each other, creating havoc in the jewel and where is Barrow? He created all this mess- when you play with fire, there are dangerous consequences to that. Unfortunately, it is the Belizean public at large who are the casualties. I bet you in two weeks time the George Street gangsters, the GSU and Barrow will all be in cahoots again- its only us the Belizean people who will still be crying and bawling and trying to cope with the savage streets.

  48. kk says:

Mixed emotions upon hearing such news i mean yes GS is crazy spot where most crimes are linked to, yes we believe that their could be grenades etc lingering about and yes the police is only doing their job but come on dont be too cruel i mean come on innocent people were involved. This is only the begining i would say now they would take revenge in stating publicaly that we should all be on the look out that innocent blood will be spreaded just adding much more fear. what a messed up situation we in right now how can the Government help? How will they help ??? Damm if peace was spread instead of violence for sure we would be tranquil with out any fear or wories

  49. Old Dean St says:

It was a nice place to live back in the 80’s but since I left Belize it seems that these new breeds are waste of life. Wanna be like the American , just hear this American Black DON’T LIKE YOU, THEY belive U all should rot in hell , I remember when you could go to the show at 8:30 out by 10:30 or so walk home all the way to Kings Park knowing you will get home, now if you go to the corner at night say your pray and kiss ur Family it might just be your last out of your house as fat as that one talk about his arm tell him people who live in glass house should not trow stone cause he sure ain’t no saint nad he finnaly got some of his shit back when you hide behind your crime it will come back and bite you when it’s that time fe mek you pay the pipper

  50. subKonshus says:

According the press release, the GSU were conducting a search? Hell, if da so dem search, I no wah si dem inna wa riot. Also, amongst the 40 plus people, did they find any gun or grenade? If they were beating on thugs and gang members, how come nobody neva bust no shot pan them back. No guns or other ammunition were on the premises? Its sounds like a large-scale replay of what they did to the owner of Cabana up in Belmopan. They ended up applying charges that came about as a result of the brutality. You bend my hand and then charge because I scream. Hell, if you beat me with a bat of course I will cuss yu r$$$. I think GSU is a political tool used to target selected groups to intimidate them. It has nothing to do with gang suppression. Coming on closer to the general elections, all you “supporting commentators” above will get the real sense and purpose of the GSU.
