Sri Lankan Movie Makers in Court on predictable deportation
The Sri Lankan nationals who arrived in Belize in August claiming to be filmmakers have had an unplanned twist to end their movie. Their immigration scam has unraveled and today eleven of them appeared in Magistrates Court to be charged for Willfully Supplying False Information to an Immigration Officer Upon Arrival. They all pleaded guilty and were fined three hundred and fifty dollars each to be paid forthwith or in default they will spend three months in prison. In mitigation, the Sri Lankan nationals gave different explanations including that they were afraid to stay in their country because of violence. Sudharassan Sampath, the leader of the group, became emotional as he addressed the court and said he didn’t want to come to Belize but took the chance because he wanted to be free. The group of eleven will spend the weekend in prison because they were unable to pay their fines today. They claim that they have the money, but would need to be taken to an ATM. With the help of a Belizean, they are hoping to pay the fines on Monday. The size of the group raised suspicion even before they landed at the PGIA since they claimed that the purpose of their visit was only to scout film locations. But information on their passports showed that the group of Sri Lankans was anything other than moviemakers.

Hmmmm, I remember when this story first broke Nigel Miguel “Belize Film Commissioner”vouch for these people, saying that they were basically who they say they were “Movie Makers”. Now that their true identities have been reveal, what does he (Nigel Miguel) have to say about his “Movie Makers”?
