B.T.B. gets new director

javier paredez

Last Friday, Seleni Matus abruptly resigned as Director of the Belize Tourism Board, a job she held for less than two years. Matus says political interference was getting in the way of her tourism plan. The Minister and Board announced today that Javier Paredez has been tagged as the Interim Director until a successor is appointed to replace Matus. We note that Paredez has been with the B.T.B. for four years. He was initially involved in the development of the 2010-2012 Action Plan and was later appointed as Director of Revenue Collections and Registrar of Hotels and Timeshare. According to the announcement, Paredez will retain those duties and as Interim Director he is additionally charged with the administration of the B.T.B.

I guess Ms. Matus did not know that BTB is a department of the Ministr of Tourism. Otherwise she would have known that any decisions of the BTB could be overruled by the CEO and Minister of Tourism. It would be an unfortunate position if BTB operated free from Ministerial oversight. After all BTB is funded by the public purse. Specifically, what ever percentage it is of the Ministry of Tourism’s budget. Some one who can be removed by the voting public (ie The Minister) should be allowed to interfere if he deems it in the best PUBLIC INTEREST. The Director of the BTB on the other hand does not have to face an election and account to the public regarding how money is spent. It would be dangerous if the BTB had eclusive control. I guess Ms. Matus was not used to this, given that she comes from the private sector. On the other hand it is understanably disappointing if your decisions are overruled for no rational reason.

Slimey midget weasel is a real @$$ hole. He is bad for the tourism industry. Must be giving the minister great BJ’s to have this post. This corrupt slimeball will finish off the hotel business in Belize. I say all hotel owners should boycot and close down for a week in protest. This person treats all hotel owners like $#it and is the biggest theif of all.
