Adelante; P.U.P. moves forward
Turning to politics, the National Executive of the People’s United Party met today at Independence Hall with Mark Espat as interim leader. The attendance was almost perfect, except for the former party leader, John Briceño and his brother Jaime who are scheduled to return to the country today. The meeting concluded just before noon and a number of decisions were taken.
The members agreed to the plan proposed for the convention to elect a new party leader on November sixth. October nineteenth is the deadline for submission of nominations. So far, attorney Arthur Saldivar, the standard bearer for Belize Rural North, is the only person to declare his intention to contest the leadership but as we have said, that hasn’t picked up any steam. Espat is yet to declare, but that may be just a matter of time. With the support and endorsement of the southern and western caucuses under his belt, the eastern caucus threw its support to Espat on Wednesday night. A release from the caucus says, “eleven of the twelve constituencies present pledged their full support for the Honorable Mark Espat as interim leader of the P.U.P. and agreed to endorse Honorable Espat as Party Leader at the upcoming National Convention. Honorable Espat brings an impeccable record of service and dedication to the country of Belize and to the constituents of the Albert Division. As the next leader of the P.U.P. we are certain that he possesses the requisite skills and experience needed to lead the Party to victory in the upcoming elections. The Eastern Caucus is the largest caucus in the country comprising of twelve of the thirteen divisions in the Belize District.”
The northern caucus is yet to proclaim but there is expressed individual support for Espat. The big hurdle remains over the party’s treasury that is swimming in debt. So that’s how it stands in the P.U.P. tonight. Convention is set for November sixth for the election or endorsement of the new leader and likely new faces to the executive. Espat is likely to declare following Saturday’s meeting of the northern caucus.

The UDP must be fearful…Hon. Espat is well respected by most PUP’s and UDP’s alike. Additionally, thousands of independent voters hold a favourable view towards Hon. Mark Espat!!!
