P.U.P. Northern Caucus supports Espat

Mark Espat

On the political front, this Wednesday is the deadline for the submission of names for the P.U.P. leadership. We note that the Interim Leader, Mark Espat, is yet to put his name on the ballot because he is working on a financing plan before any announcement is made. It is also known that should Espat take on the leadership mantle, the face of the National Executive is expected to change. So for the most part, it appears it’s just a matter of time before an announcement is made and that can come in the next twenty-four hours. But what we can say for sure is that over the weekend, the Northern Caucus, which comprises nine constituencies, including Belize Rural South, unanimously gave the nod to Espat as the new party leader. And contrary to a claim by Arthur Saldivar who is vying for leader, the Corozal southwest division gave its unequivocal support to Espat on Saturday. It means that even though Espat’s name is not yet on the ballot, he has overwhelming backing from the caucuses from north to south. Saldivar has failed to pick up any support and it is said that even his own executive in the rural north, is split. A release from the northern caucus also thanked the former leader, John Briceño, for rising to the challenge in the past three and a half years and pledged to work with Espat to bring victory to the P.U.P. in the municipal and general elections.

Well, I am not surprised. It was expected. All these guys have to tow the line even if that means violating their concious or else, they would have to kiss goodbye to monies from the party’s coffers for their individual campaign. It reminds me of a story I heard many years ago around a campfire deep in the jungles of the Chiquibul. It is said that at a Cuban convention which was filled to capacity, after an arousing speach, The whole auditorium gave a standing ovation but, there was an individual who did not stood up nor was clapping so, the other guy next to this individual whispered to him: YOU BETTER GET UP AND CLAP OR YOU WILL NOT EAT FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK without knowing that the individual he was talking to was FIDEL CASTRO HIMSELF. You got my point, right?

I have always been U.D.P. .But it might be time for a change. This government is doing to little about crime. Belize is a good country with good people, we only have a very small amount of criminals and if Government wanted or tried the crime rate could go down very fast. If MARK ESPAT becomes the P.U.P. Leader and brings back Daniel Silva, Hopefully Henry Cantun also and a few more of the good P.U.P. ministers from the past i will vote PUP next time. If Ralph Fonseca Or Said Musa are running for P.U.P. ministers i will never vote P.U.P.
