Mexican contractor with contract in Belize murdered in Mexico
The construction at the Marion Jones Stadium continued today as normal; but the news is spreading in both Belize and Mexico that one of the contractors on the multimillion dollar project was brutally murdered on Monday night. Fifty-six year Luis Cano Carillo was shot at least eight times in the parking lot of El Pollo Feliz restaurant in Quintana Roo, Mexico after which the gunmen ran over him with the getaway vehicle, breaking his right leg. Carillo’s Mexican construction company, Safie, is a partner in the joint venture to build the new Marion Jones Stadium, but in Mexico the businessman was mired in controversy. It is alleged that he was the cousin of drug lord, Amado Carillo who was killed in 2009 and there are allegations that his brothers are also involved in organized crime. The claims fueled a media scandal last year when he was awarded a contract by the Mexican government to build an expansion on the municipal prison. Carillo denied any relation or affiliation with the drug traffickers, but the possibility is still being investigated. Mexican authorities searched Carillo’s house for clues on Tuesday. They found several luxury vehicles and exotic birds, but nothing to help their investigation. He was in Mexico to pick up equipment and was expected to return on Tuesday.
