Cop convicted of bigamy
For having two wives, a police officer is facing up to seven years in prison. The interdicted cop, Luciano Jaime Pena, was today found guilty of Bigamy, which is a rare conviction in Belize. Ruby Pena, who was married to Luciano since February 1998, filed the report against him when she found out that just twelve days after their tenth anniversary, he married another woman named Olga Guzman Vazquez. The love triangle ended up before the courts and the witnesses who testified against Luciano included a friend who witnessed his first marriage, the Justice of the Peace who signed the application for his second marriage and the Deputy Registrar who presided over the union. In a twist today, Luciano denied ever being married. He says that Ruby’s last name is really Camara and that she is his common-law-wife because they live together and have three children. But the wedding picture provided to us by Ruby today tells a different story. Luciano was able to get away with a second marriage by using the Jaime Pena but his deeds caught up with him today and a jury delivered the guilty verdict after four hours of deliberation. Justice Herbert Lord has deferred sentencing until November eleventh.
