Hard hitting Sports Stats with James Adderley
Good Evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
Collet Maheia won the Annual Cross Country Cycle Classic in 1993 and has never deserted his love for cycling. So 3 years ago, he organized the Bunas Maheia Birthday Race and we must say the 3rd presentation staged was the splash Saturday. We join the finish of the elite race at Maheia’s Construction and it proves to be an all Santino’s Affair which means there’s really no sprint. Jairo Campos rolls over the finish line unopposed for 1st place, Gregg Lovell takes 2nd, Marlon Castillo settles for 3rd while the new addition Quinton Hamilton rounds out the top 4 in the 42 mile ride.
Turning to the weekend warriors in which 19 riders suited up, Geoffrey Waight, Amir Gonzalez and Martin Esquiliano quickly established a breakaway on the way back to Belize City. However, at tape time, Amir Gonzalez of Truckers Posse takes total control to grab top honors wining the 42 mile race in 02:03:39. Geoffrey Waight of Car Rentals hangs in there for 2nd place while Martin Esquiliano pulls up for 3rd. In the sprint for 4th place, Dean Boyce pulls the trigger but cannot maintain the pressure as Jose Moguel overtakes him for 4th and Perry Geban edges him for 5th. In the CAT 4 & 5 Race, Barney Brown of BCB/FT Williams takes the ride, edging out the birthday boy Maheia while Halton Ritchie rounds out the top 3. Meanwhile folks, the countdown continues to the 7th Annual Sagitun Banana Classic that will cover some 55 miles on the Southern Highway, bringing with it over $15,000 in prizes. It’s a biggie you won’t want to miss.
Turning to the football scene, most matches staged over the weekend resulted in blow-out affairs. We’re inside the Core Ramos for the Dangriga Female Football Championship staged yesterday as Pumas hosted Benguche Bonnets. From the opening whistle, it’s all Pumas people as 10 minutes in Doricia Ramos comes up with this loose ball—her shot bounces off the crossbar. It’s Iris Centeno who comes up with the loose ball to give Pumas a 1-zip lead. A few minutes later, Turia Castillo launches this right foot from long distance that embarrasses Tyrna Bernardez in goal to make it a 2-zip lead for Pumas. Just before intermission, Kuylen goes to the left foot also from long distance and again Bernardez can’t do anything about it as Pumas go up 3-zip. Nevertheless, in 2nd half, the Pumas onslaught continues. We’re 5 minutes in when Kuylen turns provider for Coricia Ramos whose header makes it a 4-zip ballgame.
Ramos then gets her 2nd goal with this left foot grounder as Pumas go up 4-nil. Folks its definitely a bad day for Tyra Bernardez in goal because even when she comes up with this save, Kuylen appears to score her 3rd goal of the match. Donnets finally show some potency when #16 mounts this individual effort to bomb Sherene Vasquez in goal to come up with her team’s sole tally. Her manager didn’t include her number and name on the list and we apologize. She would have gotten her 2nd goal on this press, except she’s denied by goalkeeper Vasquez. Make it 3 goals for Kuylen when Doricia Ramos sets table perfectly for her and she does smack it home. Pumas go on to take the title in an 8-1 rout and we say congratulations.
In news from the Belize District Female Football Competition, Lillian Joseph scored her league leading 10th and 11th goal as Island Stars dazzled Lady Orchids 3-zip. Hattieville Heats burned Sandhill Untouchables 3-1 while Millennium blanked Ladyville Tornados 4-zip. In out 40 football play at the MCC Grounds yesterday, Kulture Yabra pummelled Lake I in a 10-zip massacre and plaza crushed United FC 7 to 1. Sounds like goals were being given away yesterday.
Just a correction, and you can check the source, in the weekend warriors race 5th place was won by Perry Gibson from AAA loans and not Perry Geban as stated in the news.
