Highway Accident could have been worse

Last Friday, a young girl was killed in Double Head Cabbage when she was hit by a school bus. There is another traffic accident to report to night, but fortunately there are no casualties.  It happened at mile twelve on the Western Highway shortly before eight o’clock this morning and left one person hospitalized in a serious condition.  According to an eyewitness account, a red vehicle traveling in the direction of Belmopan was seen overtaking several others when it narrowly managed to squeeze its way back into the outbound lane.  The sudden swerve caused three vehicles, two heading towards Belize City, to collide into each other causing severe injuries to one of the motorists.  The driver of the speeding vehicle, whose identity remains unknown, did not stop to render assistance.  Police and emergency personnel were immediately summoned to the scene of the pileup where the injured person was rushed to Belize City for medical attention.  The occupants of the damaged vehicles, an Isuzu Trooper, a Suzuki Vitara and a maroon pickup, complained of varying degrees of injuries that are not considered to be life threatening.

This afternoon, forty-five year old Omar Larin, a Salvadoran pastor, was arraigned for obstruction of traffic, because he attempted to overtake another vehicle in the wrong lane. Larin, who was unrepresented, spoke no English and had to be provided with a translator. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined one hundred dollars, which he had to pay immediately since he is not a Belizean.
