Forget turkey, P.U.P. cries foul on Xmas Program

Two releases came from the People’s United Party today. In respect of forty thousand dollars being granted by government to U.D.P. representatives, the opposition calls it “misuse of taxpayer funds.” Last Friday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow confirmed the “Christmas Assistance Program” to benefit select families. Barrow had said that Area Reps. are being granted up to forty thousand dollars in each of the thirty-one constituencies, totaling one point two four million Belize dollars. But the P.U.P. says that the monies are being granted only to U.D.P. Members of Parliament, Area Reps. and Standard Bearers. The release goes on to say that “any public assistance to Belizean Families, particularly at this time of year, should be apportioned in a fair and equitable and transparent manner and channeled via legitimate social organizations; and all duly elected representatives of the people ought to be consulted as to the distribution to ensure that those in most need receive such assistance.”  The P.U.P. calls this latest initiative a blatant attempt to win over voters and therefore calls on the Auditor General and the Ombudsman to investigate the program for fraud or misappropriation of public funds.

This practice seems to be pretty flagrant corruption. Taxpayer money must never be used for political favours.

  2. Lucas says:

This money would had gone a long way to better equipe our soldiers for patrolling the border. But what the hell. It is more important to win an election than protecting our borders. If it is tax money, Barrow should had brought it to parliament. If it is money from donations, then Barrow is guilty of the same for which he took Musa to court. Anyway, it stinks to high heaven.

Sour grapes, me thinks!! If the PUP area reps had gotten some to distribute you no mi wan hear no complain.

  4. Teacher says:

To the PUP: When the Barrows do it, it is not to be called “misappropriation of funds,” because their ascendancy to power is by divineness! They therefore have an entitlement to do as they please, and feed themselves and their cronies from the public coffers. The earthly laws created by earthly men (the National Assembly and judge made law) does not apply to them. There is absolutely nothing wrong in the GOB hiring Lois Young Barrow and Denys Barrow as private attorneys. There is nothing wrong with appointing Anwar Barrow to BTL’s board. And there was nothing wrong in appointing Shyne as musical ambassador, and Denys as a Court of Appeal Judge, and also nothing wrong in awarding an oil concession over thousands of acres of the Jewel to Kimano Barrow. Moral: When the Barrows do it, it is not corruption. These people are absolutely divine!

This sort of crap should never happen but those who are now complaining were also guilty of the same sin some time ago but we all get amnesia when the table turns!

People should get public help when needed but this help should never be distributed by elected officials! These are public funds and they should serve the public with no regards with ones voting choice. All needy Belizeans should have equal oppertunity by filing an application and submitting it to an NGO entrusted with equally distributing help to those that need it.
